Levi Okunov's Torah-Inspired Fashion Show Shakes Things Up at the Jewish Museum
By Gregory Christie

Orthodox Jews, renegade Hasidim, fashionistas and art aficionados converged on New York’s Jewish Museum last Thursday night for the unveiling of wily and prodigious designer Levi Okunov’s new, museum-inspired collection. The show represented the climax to the institution’s two-week “Off the Wall” series, a program of young, Jewish artists working in a variety of media.
The show began, much like the Torah, in stark darkness. Suddenly, the runway was illuminated by Melissa Shiff’s “JAMS: The Jewish Animated Mandala Series.” The crowd was confronted with a series of ritual objects bursting into a spectrum of fractal patterns, accompanied by spacey, ambient music. Minutes later, figure skater Oksana Baiul appeared on the runway draped in vertical stripes reminiscent of the black and white pattern favored by some sects of Hasidim. After prowling the runway, she squealed as if just completing a triple-axle and then skipped back towards the curtain.

Afternoon Style in an L.A. Supermarket
By Kim Hastreiter

Look what my friend Jeff Snyder just emailed me! He saw this woman dressed to the nines yesterday afternoon perusing the cheese section at Gelson's Market on Franklin and Bronson. He followed her, snapping photos with his cellphone. Good look for the supermarket, no???? God, I love L.A. for its fashion inspiration....

Fashionably Dead: Blood And Black Lace!
By Dennis Dermody
In honor of Fashion Week I put up the trailer for Mario Bava's great 1964 film Blood and Black Lace (aka Sei Donne Per L'assassino), which is about a series of mysterious murders set around a top fashion house. There is glamour, high fashion, drugs, mannequins, murderers wearing cool black leather gloves and plenty of models getting murdered. What more could a person possibly ask for?

Edie Sedgwick, Santa Barbara Girl
By Ann Magnuson
Of course, perhaps the most famous Santa Barbara native-turned-bohemian was the legendary Edie Sedgwick. Poor Edie. Gorgeous. Privileged. Photogenic. Doomed. But you gotta love her comments about the fashion world in the clip above. Naked as a lima bean? Yup. Speedballs kill. Below is a trailer for Ciao Manhattan, a real classic. Whoa. Drugs. Don't do 'em kids. At least she got to return to Santa Barbara and found some real love in the end.

The Bunny Report: My Glasses, Myself
By Jordan Kinney

Hay y’all! After an extended post New York Fashion Week vaycay, I’ve returned to the charming village of Manhattan for the usual aimless fashion forward fraternizing. Howev, since the point of my reentrance, tragedy has already ensued in the form of my foot, mid dance-move, rhythmically stepping on my now permanently damaged glasses. Nerdy! I brought them to the eye doctor to see if surgery could save them. Outlook cloudy. (Oh, and I’ll have all naysayers know, though I am ever the proponent of functionless personal ornamentation, my eyewear has always served as a completely necessary fashion statement due to my retardedly bad old lady vision.)

Bethann Hardison Brings It: Talking About a Revolution
By Rebecca Carroll
There's very little that pleases me more than a room full of beautiful black people.
Especially when the room includes André Leon Talley, Naomi Campbell (who could not have been more delightful, by the way), Liya Kebede, Tyson Beckford, Constance White, Iman (could she possibly be more beautiful?) and the legendary Bethann Hardison, who both organized and hosted the event -- a town hall type gathering held at the screening room at the Bryant Park Hotel to address the lack of black models in the fashion industry.
There were other people of color and white folks in attendance, too, but it was mostly gorgeous brown-skinned faces, many of whom I recognized from various projects and points in my career: former model and author Barbara Summers, who spoke vividly at the meeting, was an interview subject in my first book, I Know What the Red Clay Looks Like; the exceptionally dope-ass fashion stylist Michaela Angela Davis, with whom I sat on a panel at the Smithsonian some years back, was there kicking it on point; and my dear friend, the brilliant documentary producer, Selina Lewis Davidson, was there filming the event for a doc-in-progress she's working on with Bethann.

Chloe's Collection for Opening Ceremony
By Kim Hastreiter

Yesterday I was invited to Opening Ceremony to check out the new Chloë Sevigny collection which I am curious to see. She is actually doing the collection in collaboration with the great store. The logo is really cute (see above) and I think this could be really good, considering Chloë's great sense of style. I'll let you know after I see it on September 10th!

The Bunny Report: Wide-legged Pants "TOTALLY Retarded My Speedwalk."
By Jordan Kinney

I tried to be all progressive with these wide-legged pants but I pretty much stopped caring after all that extra fabric kept like, flapping in the wind -- they TOTALLY retarded my speedwalk. I expected the typical public reactions to what I normally wear (outrage, denial, hurt) and yet the delinquent youths on my street were noticeably more hesitant with their multilingual verbal abuse. Whatev, I don’t care what my hateful neighbors say (or don’t say), it was way hard to maintain my dramatic runway pace in these giganto trousers and for that reason I now contractually oblige myself to exclusively adorn pants that fit like spandex leggings -- or sans pants I shall stroll! But I digress. I thought this entire outfit was pretty nice until I realized this other dude wore something strikingly similar (down to the crown-perched hat!) in a certain music video I’d recently encountered during an accidental viewing of TRL (What? I couldn’t find the remote!)...

Sexclowns!
By Kim Hastreiter

I got an email this morning from my old friend, Belgian designer Walter Von Beirendonck, whom I have not heard from in ages. He sent me some pix from his last collection which he aptly called his "Sexclown" collection. Walter's brightly-colored, pop, cartoon work has always been slightly off-trend in his home town of Antwerp, the capital of deconstructive fashion, (his aesthetic is more like Castelbajac than Martin Margiela), but he's stuck to his guns and his work has developed a true following. Pictured above are a couple of funny looks from his last Sexclown show.

Koi Swimwear: To Swim or Not to Swim?
By Sacha Phillip

Prompted, while prepping for a trip to L.A., by the glut of too-plain, too-tacky or too-expensive swimsuits in stores, Toronto-based designer Jennifer Bharti gave herself a mission: to design swimwear that was equal parts glam, comfortable and affordable. The result is her label, Koi Swimwear.
Just as its name is inspired by a variety of sources -- in fact, it’s a tribute to both the water-friendly nature of the collection, and Bharti’s Chinese heritage -- Koi pieces are meant to be worn in a variety of ways. Designed to look fabulous, whether you’re lounging poolside or schmoozing at a cocktail party, Koi’s bikinis, maillots and cover-ups layer luxuriously. For example: a plunging one-piece takes on sophisticated street style, when paired with trouser-cut denim pants.
Since our days as undergrads at the University of Western Ontario, Bharti has been known for adeptly combining chic, sexy and sporty in her wardrobe. She has translated this sartorial sensibility into Koi, creating more-than-just-swimwear swimwear. We recently caught up with Bharti to discuss bathing attire and style.

Eat My Pucci
By Shanon Kelley
I'm not a fashion maven by any means, but some things do tickle my fancy every now and then that I must share with the world. Case in point: Darkhorse. It took me quite a while to track down this designer from Toronto.
It all started when I was reading an LA blog and happened to notice a girl in a photo wearing what quickly became my obsession -- a t-shirt reading "Eat My Pucci." I decided that I had to have it. After a month (I kid you not) of scouring the Internet I finally found it, met the man behind the shirt and got myself one. Phew!
And that's my story. Check out his website for more amazing clothes.

Hillary's Cleavage Wars
By David Hershkovits

Politics, fashion and the media don't often interface, but when they do I don't want to miss an opportunity to comment, especially when it involves the state of Hillary Clinton's cleavage. When is a little too much?
A slow news day found Robin Givhan, the Washington Post's Pulitzer Prize winning fashion reporter, watching C-Span. (Guess that's what Washington reporters do on a slow news day!) What she saw was Hillary expounding on the burdensome cost of higher education. But what caught her eye was something altogether different.
She was wearing a rose-colored blazer over a black top. The neckline sat low on her chest and had a subtle V-shape. The cleavage registered after only a quick glance. No scrunch-faced scrutiny was necessary. There wasn't an unseemly amount of cleavage showing, but there it was. Undeniable.

The Bunny Report: "I Call This Look Chessmaster-Chic"
By Jordan Kinney
From now on, everyday that intern Jordan Kinney, aka “Bunny,” comes into the office, he’ll be walking us through his look. Here’s his first installment.
Mmm, the personal joys of social disapproval! As I sauntered uptown to the PAPER offices this morning, I collected my daily affirmations from various city dwellers (garbage men, urban youth collectives, hungover shame-walkers, etc.) ranging from the always friendly cries of “Freak!” to the mildly confused heckles of “Urkel!” With such reception, I knew today’s self-styling was yet again a success!
I call this look “chessmaster-chic” -- a monochramtic ode to Jeremy Scott (or at least the T-shirt prints of the eighties that he appropriates) and uh… timeless recreational gaming or whatever. The shirt is actually a dress, I think, but who really cares -- good fashion knows no gender! Judging from the increased assignments of freakdom by the general public today, I’d say it’s a real crowd pleaser!
I have four pairs of these white H&M jeans because I hate doing laundry (and by doing laundry I mean bringing it to the laundry service where other people do it for me) and I tend to spill various condiments on myself throughout any given day (today’s include ketchup and egg yolk, grossss).

Threeasfour Nominated for CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award
By Kim Hastreiter
So, my friends Threeasfour made it to the top ten designers competing for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund award. These guys deserve to win for sure, but of course, coming from me, that's a jinx because everyone that I ever think should win never wins. I guess I just don't have a Vogue-type head. TAF are completely original, their work is beautifully crafted and they have proven that they are serious about what they are doing (they have been at this for many years now). Talk about an arty party. I'd love to be a fly on the wall when they explain their work to the judge table. Hopefully they wont scare the judges! A couple of other good designers made the top ten list... Rogan and Erin Fetherston who I also think are great.. I hope Threeasfour gets the money because they really need this shot in the arm...plus they've got the goods.

Fashion Heads Up: MSG Does a Body Good
By Marya Spence

Mami Suzuki is a culturally savvy, sprite little cookie of a clothing designer with a lot of talent up her sleeve. You'll want to know her name, because she's going to be big. Her NoLIta boutique MSG (which opened two weeks ago) is currently carrying her moderately priced, one-of-a-kind pieces which have graced both the shoulders of the Princess of Thailand and, yes, a regal few of us at PAPERMAG.
Originally from Tokyo, Mami is in New York on a mission to bring her Japanese, Southeast Asian, ‘70s disco and function-inspired pieces to the hub of American fashion. With its multiple influences, her style is incredibly unique -- but nothing in the store is beyond wearable. She has artfully structured wool suits and feminine chiffon blouses alongside a sparkling, champagne-hued, three-tiered dress -- a swingy disco confection I didn't want to take off. Then there's also the "Imelda" dress, named for the former Filipino First Lady, Imelda Romualdez Marcos. It's a platinum crepe, knee-length dress with detachable bouffant sleeves. Indeed, there's an intoxicating mix in this dress: it makes me feel equal parts delicate butterfly and powerful dictator. I feel suddenly pretty, yet secretly un-crushable.

Art and Fashion Collabs Are Everywhere
By Kim Hastreiter

Art is certainly ruling the fashion world these days. Marilyn Minter's new Tom Ford ad campaign is gorgeous (see photo at left) and Cindy Sherman's piece for Carine Roitfeld's French Vogue is outrageous (see photo at right). Levis is collaborating with Damien Hirst for a fall show. Where will it stop? I think Versace should collab with Kehinde Wiley -- wouldn't that be amazing? And oh yeah, Jeff Koons with Marc Jacobs. Just imagine how great that would be... (thanks by the way to WWD for the photos of Cindy Sherman)

Preen Cocktail Party at the Soho Grand
By Carol Lee

A couple of nights ago I went to a cocktail party for the London design duo Preen in the garden at the Soho Grand. Joseph Quartana from Seven, the host of the night, held the court and greeted the guests dressed in severely cute outfits which is very much the Seven aesthetic -- nouveau new wave. In case you're not familiar with Preen's work, they make gorgeous, sharp, tailored dresses among other things. To give you an idea i pulled two of my favorite Preen dresses (above) from Seven's web site. And here are some photos of the major lookers at the party.

My Favorite Dress
By Kim Hastreiter
I saw a photo of this dress yesterday in WWD and I can't stop looking at it. It is a dress Isabel Toledo designed for her resort collection for Anne Klein. I think it is so beautiful -- the puce color, the drape, the length, the proportions. Even the shoes. It's so "goddess" in the best sense of the word. And I think its so modern also. I was so excited to see such a beautiful piece because I feel like Isabel is getting her sea legs at AK is really going to sock it to us next season. Isn't it beautiful?

Arnhem's Radical Fashion
By Kim Hastreiter
The real fashion buzz and energy this week was not, I'm sorry to say, at the CFDA Awards, where the usual suspects in American fashion gathered and applauded themselves in a heavily corporate-branded (Swarovski Awards, Geoffrey Beene Awards, you get the picture) partisan event that hailed the business of fashion rather than the creativity of fashion. No surprises. No inspiration. No fun. To me it was disappointing.
The real fashion inspiration-slash-shock took place this week thousands and thousands of miles away in Arnhem, Holland where the Arnhem Fashion Biennial program opened with a boom, bang and sizzle and independant forward thinking designers from all over the world gathered to show their stuff. No mention of business here. No corporate-sponsor-owned designer awards. Just plain amazing inspiration and pure fashion ideas.
Our friend Sarah, the proprietor of the best shop in Paris, Colette, sent me some fun photos she took at Arnhem over the weekend of some super cool vibes and inspiration for fashion's future. You can also read about more Arnhem escapades on Diane Pernet's Shaded View of Fashion.

Lovefoxxx and a Bodysuit Make a Great Pair
By Shanon Kelley
I went to the CSS show the other night at Irving Plaza. It was a tough choice between them (my buddies) and Animal Collective (my idols), but in the end I opted for seeing the Brazilian cuties. It was good decision! CSS brought the house down, as did their openers, Tampa's Yo Majesty, a hip hop trio of black lesbians.
My favorite part of the night (and the reason for this blog) was Lovefuxxx's outfit. We all know that the CSS leading lady likes to wear bodysuits while she performs, but this one topped them all! It was specially made for her by a friend/designer in Brazil. It's covered in thousands upon thousands of rainbow sequins. Love it!
And you know who else love's it? Donita Sparks! That's right, the lady of L7 fame loves CSS and did a mash up of "Alala" and "Pretend We're Dead." Listen to it on their MySpace page.

Trovata Alumni Return
By Kim Hastreiter

I just got a cute obscure card in the mail from an entity named SHIPLY & HALMOS. The card said THANK YOU on the front of it and when I opened it popped up and said simply,"TO DEAL IN FRIENDS IN BUSINESS IS THE ONLY BUSINESS WE DEAL IN." Now Jeff Halmos (above left) and Sam Shiply (above right) were the two guys who left Trovata and now seem to be heading out on their own as the back of the card indicates: Spring 2008.
Can't wait to see what these guys come up with. Of all the Trovata boys, the one who I always had bonded with most was Halmos. He was a sweetheart. Looking forward...

Happy 60th Birthday Pucci!!!
By Mickey Boardman

It's no secret that Mr. Mickey loves some fun color combinations and who does that better than Pucci? The Florence-based fashion house celebrated it's 60th anniversary with a swell shindig at the Palazzo Pucci. Come on, how much would you pay to live in the Palazzo Pucci!!!??? Here's a snap from Style.com of three of the most glamourous of glamour pusses in attendance: Delphine Arnault, Elizabeth Hurley and Laudomia Pucci.
Naturally the current designer of Pucci, sexy and succulent Matthew Williamson was there, with his ultra-gorgeous friend Kylie Minogue. Mr. Mickey think Kylie is the closest thing we have to another Dolly Parton today. Dolly is literally an angel from heaven and so is Kylie, although since she's younger, Dolly's legend status is more established.
Finally, check out these amazing Pucci print balloons in the courtyard of the Palace. Mr. Mickey is gagging over those!!!

Frisco Day Two: Part II
By Kim Hastreiter

The latter part of yesterday I spent with my dear MAC (Modern Appealing Clothing) friends Ben and Chris Ospital, who threw a super fun gathering for me at their fabulous shop (see photos of their shop, MAC, above!) in the Hayes district (on Grove Street), inviting all the talented young kids that they knew around to come and show me what they do. For three hours, I met cuties of all sorts. Not only did I meet kids who make amazing jewelry, shirts, menswear and dresses, but they generously invited kids who have lots of small shops in the Mission to stop by and meet me. Some old friends came by too. I adored seeing my kooky friend, artist/psychedelic graphic designer Tom Bonauro, who I haven't seen in years.
The great folks from this chocolate company named POCO DOLCE came by with boxes of their amazing salted bittersweet tiles (try these, they're sick). My friend Nick Graham (of Joe Boxer fame) stopped by. Nick has a cool new company called Wonderbrand (he's making underwear now for half the world it seems!) but... get this... Nick (another kook) is going to be opening "boutiques" in the Goodwill stores in San Francisco under the label "WILLIAM GOOD." In these shops within the shop, he will invite celebrity "curators" (fashion folks, artists, design mavens) to come and troll the Goodwill store for fabulousness, taking the treasures found and cleaning them up, putting WILLIAM GOOD labels into them and displaying them in fabulosity. Isn't that hilarious? Of course, he's invited me to be one of the first curators and -- get this -- the president of Goodwill is a huge PAPER fan. Hysterical.

Kate Moss, Art Muse
By David Hershkovits

Kate Moss's Topshop line makes its U.S. debut tomorrow at Barney's. Many early reviews for her Topshop line have been less than flattering, but there's no accounting for taste, so expect to see these items flying off the racks. The cash registers will be ringing not only for Moss and Barneys, where it will be among the cheapest items sold in the store, but also for artist Marc Quinn. Quinn's sculptures of Moss in various yoga positions are on display at the Mary Boone Gallery through June 30. This is far from the first time Moss has served as muse for artists. Artcritical reminds us that W, following in the footsteps of British Vogue, commissioned artists and photographers to immortalize the uber model waif as well. The list of artists (not commercial photographers) who have used her in their work include Chuck Close, Lucian Freud, Alex Katz, Lisa Yuskavage, Richard Prince, Chapman Brothers, Gary Hume and Tom Sachs.

Isabella Blow: RIP
By Mickey Boardman

We here at MMBlog have heard a horribly upsetting and devastating rumor that style legend Isabella Blow has died. A source close to Mr. Mickey has said that the cause of death is suicide, but we're hoping it's not true -- though this would not be Blow's first attempt (she jumped off a bridge), and her friends have been concerned about her for some time.
Blow hadn't lost her sense of humor completely, and after surviving the bridge jump, she joked with Mr. Mickey that she was no longer able to wear heels and had to wear flats.
Blow is an icon to all fashion lovers and has discovered many talents, championing the likes of Alexander McQueen, Jeremy Scott, Sophie Dahl and of course, her longtime collaborator, milliner Philip Treacy.
We are hoping this terrible news is just a rumor, but if it's not, we're absolutely devastated and this is a terrible loss.
UPDATE: The Telegraph has confirmed her death and is reporting that cancer was the cause of death.

Neon and "The Book Is On The Table"
By Shanon Kelley
My fabulous bathing suit (which I purchased at Opening Ceremony here in New York City) was designed by none other than the Sao Paulo designer Neon. I was wearing it this last weekend at Coachella ,and crazily enough, most of CSS (some of them being designers themselves) are friends with Neon. And luckily for us, those Brazilians are wacky and fabulous!
Adriano Cintra of CSS was kind enough to pass on this video for an insane song called "The Book Is On The Table." See that crazy long-haired fellow? Well, that's the designer otherwise known as Neon! By the way, this video is amazing.

Shop of the Week: Allegra Hicks
By Whitney Spaner

British/Italian designer Allegra Hicks, whose flagship store opened in London's ritzy Knightsbridge neighborhood nine years ago, has found an equally well-to-do nook in Manhattan. On a recent trip to Hicks's new eponymous boutique, a perfectly put-together woman (I gathered, a society lady) was buying a beachy, beige tunic for a dinner party. Another -- nanny and baby stroller in tow -- searched for a white dress for a wedding in the Bahamas, and another hastily tried on triple-digit-priced items to wear that very night. It's true that Hicks's price points ($255 and up) can be exclusive, but her style doesn't discriminate: lots of sparkly cocktail wear, long printed dresses, patent-leather T-strap sandals (designed by Hicks in collaboration with Ferragamo) and breezy kaftans (a signature Allegra item), in bold colors like fuchsia, marigold and turquoise for women of any age. Aside from clothes, the store offers home accessories, such as a pair of fire-engine-red candles shaped like barren trees and matching dining trays. Hicks keeps things personal, with items like eye-catching Venetian-glass rings made by her friends at Leg and Brain and a children's book written by her husband, Ashley (who also designed the shop). To compliment the collection, Allegra has written The Getaway, a photo-illustrated comic book about a frustrated housewife who escapes from her humdrum life to team up with a hot bank robber wearing Allegra Hicks. And that's just what her clothes are made for -- a getaway, whether running off to a party or the beach. Allegra Hicks outfits your fantasy. 1007 Madison Ave., (212) 249-4241.

Forget Project Runway. This Is the Real Deal.
By Kim Hastreiter

Every year, young, super-innovative fashion hopefuls gather from around the world in the south of France in Hyeres for a competition that has become legendary. I've always wanted to go but have never had the time to actually do this... It is such an inspiring gathering of young creatives/talent, fashion lovers, talent scouts and enlightened fashion press. This spectacular annual gathering is called the Hyeres Festival of Fashion and Photography and took place this past weekend in a villa tucked away on a hill.
The final competition this year down to ten designers and ten photographers from countries like Sweden, Belgium, Germany, the UK, Japan and France. The jury is led by Christian Lacroix and also includes designer Kim Jones and other art directors and members of the non-mainstream fashion press (Dazed and Confused, Tank). Additionally, the festival offers alternative fashion-centric conferences, catwalk shows, parties and exhibitions. The best way to find out what went on there is through my friend Diane Pernet's blog (A Shaded View on Fashion). Check out her coverage of Hyeres 2007 here.

Take That: Lip Service T-Shirt
By Alexis Swerdloff

So, when we posted that we were giving away a copy of the re-released Hope Floats soundtrack, we received a full-on onslaught of comments from people telling us why they deserved to own the CD. Clearly, we had hit a nerve! After poring over the oodles of emails, we finally decided to go the schmaltzy route, and settled upon Stefan. Here's why he deserves the Hope Floats soundtrack:
"My then-girlfriend (now my wife) and I watched this movie together back in 1998, just weeks before we got married. It was the first movie we watched together after getting back together after a 6-month break up. I am a sentimental fool, I admit, but it was this movie that convinced me to ask her the question. Our anniversary is coming up in a few weeks. Being able to give her this soundtrack would be a great anniversary gift."
Congrats, Stefan! Do us proud!
