About Last Night... The Red Thread: The Inspiration & Passion of Valentino Garavani

By Rebecca Prusinowski and Rebecca Suhrawardi Austin

There are more photos in this gallery. View them all.

Last night, The Rebeccas with looong last names (Prusinowski and Suhrawardi Austin) hit the opening reception for The Red Thread: The Inspiration & Passion of Valentino Garavani, a multi-media exhibit celebrating the designer's looks and legacy. The crowd (which included Liv Tyler, Mary J. Blige, Rachel Zoe, Chanel Iman, Katie Lee Joel and Vivica A. Fox) seemed to have only one thing in mind: Meeting the master. At one point in the evening, the Rebeccas found themselves sitting together with the iconic Italian himself... a Valentino Sandwich, if you will! Rebecca S. A. nearly went into cardiac arrest!

Meanwhile Rebecca P. was on the prowl for some Fashion Week footwear -- check in throughout the week for her FWFW reports -- and Project Runway's reigning alum Christian Siriano caught her eye with some pointy tan patent leathers. We assumed the snazzy pair were by some chi-chi label, but they were from ZARA!!! "Say they're vintage!" he joked. No way! Knowing he shops at the Spanish mass retailer makes them even more fierce in our book.

Rebecca P. then chatted up uber-stylist Rachel Zoe and inquired about her Fashion Week footwear predictions for the upcoming collections. "The highest high platforms possible. Higher than ever!" she grinned. Eeek! That doesn't bode well for those of us who teeter on two inches. "Or it could go in the other direction and be all flats," she added less enthusiastically. Does she ever wear flats? "Never, ever." Well, then, is there a height limit to her heels? "No limit! If Marc Jacobs made stilts, I'd be the first to wear them!" We eyed the marvelous 5-plus-inch monsters she had on and knew she wasn't lying!

Venerable Louis Boston to Relocate in 2010

By Julia Frakes

louisboston.jpegOur beloved Louis Boston ("Loooeeez Baahsten") will be relocating from its esteemed Newberry Street location in Boston's former Natural History Museum. Louis brought a certain kooky, offbeat panache to the now thoroughly mainstream fashion street.

The artsy independent department store often draws comparisons to Barneys New York for how it fosters up-and-coming designers including Brian Reyes, Elise Øverland, Lyn Devon and Olga Kapustina as well as offbeat labels like Dries Van Noten, Jonathan Saunders, Nathen Jenden and Marni; its innovative in-store restaurant; and venerated home and fragrance departments boasting Costes, Diptyque and Fornasetti.

About Last Night: CFDA's 7th on Sale Gala

By Caroline Torem Craig

Last night the floodgates opened to the resounding roar of celebrities sashaying in all their glory lighting up the miserable old Lexington Armory for the CFDA's 7th on Sale Gala. The air was giddy with perfume and excitement in the cavernous space which is stocked with donated designer goods to be sold at a fraction of their cost benefiting AIDS Research.

It was the best attended party this decade! Think the Oscars meets the MET’s Costume Institute Gala with a dash of the the MTV Video Music Awards. Let me just drop some drop-dead names—Kate Moss,Kate Bosworth ,Bette Midler, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Elle Macpherson, Valentino, Naomi Campbell, Dita Von Teese, Eve, Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, Jennifer Connelly, Parker Posey! Ok, I have to stop, but it was truly an amazing night! See for yourself below!

Mr. Mickey Takes on Paris Fashion Week: Karl Lagerfeld & Valentino

By Mickey Boardman

lagerfeldvalentino

Two legends of fashion kicked things off Wednesday, and what a study in contrasts they were! Karl Lagerfeld, the most creamy, white-powdered-hair-sporting Teuton on the rue Cambon and Valentino, the tannest Italiano on the Spanish Steps.

Lagerfeld's show (under his Karl Lagerfeld label) was fashion with a capital F: lavish rainbow set, all the top models, no expense spared. The collection was a lot about sheerness, with organza pants giving an interesting, almost hosiery effect (see above left). The shapes we're young and fun and there was even a bit of sparkle!

valentino

Valentino showed his final collection (ex-Gucci designer Alessandra Fachinetti takes over next season) and hordes of fashion fans of all stripes descended on the Carrousel du Louvre to see the King of Italian Fashion. The show was true theater with groups of models strutting together down the catwalk and working it. The clothes were classic Valentino and made us wish we were a gorgeous jet set princess with lots of chic social engagements. The shapes were sophisticated but the short lengths and the decollete kept things feeling young and fresh. The first group of pink and purple pieces (see top right) was a very confident statement. A group of white and a black and white polka dotted pieces were also bold. A recurring theme was circular cutouts that resembled fold-out party globes that gave fun bits of drama and movement to dresses and gowns. People who were expecting an all red show of Val's greatest hits were surprised to see that although he might be well past legal retirement age, the old gal still has some tricks up his sleeve. Thanks for the highest of high fashion memories!

Mr. Mickey Takes on Paris Fashion Week: Viktor & Rolf and Jeremy Scott

By Mickey Boardman

paris fashion week

viktor and rolfThe only thing Mr. Mickey likes more than a classic out-there Viktor & Rolf show is V&R show where they throw the kids for a loop by showing how beautifully they can do classic chic clothing with just a teensy splash of eccentricity. The latter is what happened on Tuesday. The runway was the wildest thing about the show -- the models emerged from a giant blow-up of a woman's mouth with a V&R logo on her uvula.

The music, all hypnotic mixes of The Carpenters’ “Close to You,” contributed to the feeling of gorgeous lethargy, an almost Stepford feeling of chic. The beauty look was a very fresh update on ‘70s Valentino, which seems to be going around these days. The clothes were super chic, often with a playful but restrained Harlequin theme; beautiful dresses in white with black diamond-shaped details and restrained ruffles. The wide, wide, wide pants felt so refreshing and the ruffled dresses felt so classic and yet mildly subversive. Many of the clothes had whimsical pom-pom details that were shockingly small considering this was Viktor & Rolf, designers who've built their reputation on blowing things up to almost cartoon proportions. The collection featured the new line of handbags that are being produced by Gibo, further establishing V&R as a full-service global luxury brand the pair hopes to become. The final look was a nod to the V&R we've all come to expect with a larger-than-life pink confection of an ensemble that carried all the classic V&R touches.
