Eight Items or Less... Is Back!

By Gary Pini

atm

Gary Pini, our special, roving corresondent, has ceased to rove for a bit, and is back here at PAPERMAG HQ -- where we like him! Here are his aforementioned items!

With all the hype surrounding Casey Affleck and his upcoming projects -- Gone Baby Gone and The Assassination of Jesse James -- we wonder why our favorite Casey flick isn't even mentioned in in the press releases. We are talking, of course, about Drowning Mona (2000). The film, also starring Bette Midler, is hilarious. Rent it for the weekend!

DJs, both professional and bedroom, have been buzzing for the last few weeks about the eminent release of a new toy designed just for them. Called the Pacemaker, the handheld device is being billed as "the world's first professional pocket-size DJ system" that should allow you to arrive at your neighbor's loft party, plug in to their stereo and mix tracks from 120GB storage with bend, pitch, cue etc. just like turntables. Is Serato doomed? Out in November, though it has already been delayed once, the device should cost around $700.

Surprised by the selection of the Klaxons for the UK Mercury Prize for LP of the year? The nu-rave group beat out favorites Arctic Monkeys and Amy Winehouse with their LP Myths of the Near Future and they are appearing in New York City on Monday, September 24, with Bjork. The official afterparty is at Rebel on 30th Street and features Steve Aoki and Spank Rock.

The Spiegeltent in the South Street Seaport has been the summer home of everything from off-off Broadway shows to Turntables on the Hudson. They are folding for the season on September 30th. The tent is then planning to move to Miami and re-open on the beach at 23rd Street and Collins with a similar format and food and beverages provided by the nearby Raleigh Hotel. We hear they are looking for local Miami promoters to rock the house after the performances.

Though we haven't quite figured out the right use for them, we were intrigued by the availability of customized fake ATM receipts. Available for $5 plus shipping for four receipts at customreceipts.com, they allow you to include your own name and any "balance" you choose. Don't be greedy.

Devotchka Live at Spiegeltent

By Shanon Kelley

devotchkaLast week I saw Devotchka play live at the Spiegeltent. This venue seem to be a perfect fit as this is the second year in a row they've performed here. Perhaps it's because they were originally a backing band for burlesque shows, or perhaps it's because their music (to quote from Wikipedia) "fuses Romani, Greek, Slavic, Bolero, and Mariachi music with American punk and folk roots." Both characteristics fit the Spiegeltent ideology, but who cares, really, because it's a perfect fit -- period. Their show was exuberant and quite delightful. Go see them if you ever get the chance, otherwise check them out on their MySpace page.

Summer Shows!

By Shanon Kelley

pool parties

This years picks for Summerstage, River To River Festival and Celebrate! Brooklyn were looking a little thin last time I checked. The most promising shows I noted were Animal Collective at the South Street Seaport on June 1st (a free show!) and The Decemberists and Grizzly Bear at Central Park's Summerstage July 17th. Another promising one includes Battery Park's annual July 4th free show, this year featuring The New Pornographers. And for those of you wondering about the Siren Music Festival (slated for July 21st), the lineup hasn't been announced yet. Everyone keep their shirts on.

These can barely touch the epic-ness that was last year's New York summer show bonanza, so I was delighted when JellyNYC finally announced the McCarren Park Pool Parties free show lineup. This year's lineup will include Blonde Redhead, Ted Leo/Rx, The Thermals, Ghostland Obervatory, Octopus Project, Man Man, Illinois, I'm From Barcelona, Dengue Fever, THE RUB DJs and more to come. YAY!

Another exciting venue this year is Spiegeltent. The famous cabaret/salon tent will be making its second summer appearance downtown at the Fulton Fish Market with several unique shows and performances. Some exciting ones include the Shout Out Louds, DeVotchka (who played last year as well), Lady Sovereign, Badly Drawn Boy, Jose Gonzalez and O'Death -- Oh my!

So there you have it! The summer is finally starting to look up -- no thanks to you, Summerstage and Celebrate! Brooklyn...
