Créme de la Créme: Under $20 Edition

By Carol Lee

Under $20 Edition

1. Tiger Balm - $5.27
Tiger Balm used to be so ubiquitous, but now it feels like a product of a by-gone era. Well, I've fallen in love with TB all over again! I saw it all tucked away in my medicine cabinet with a rusty cap and remembered what a multi-tasker this little guy can be -- from muscle aches, insect bites to a stuffy nose. I also love the smell of camphor.

2. Stella McCartney Stella Eau de Parfum Roll-On - $13
I saw this at Sephora and thought it was the best on-the-go perfume. It is exactly the size of a Tide stain remover pen and it smells really nice -- flowery but not too sweet... can't go wrong with notes of rose, peony, mandarin, rose and amber.

3. Smith's Rosebud Salve - $5.50
Another timeless gem. The directions say use it on chapped skin, blemishes, diaper rash and detergent burn. Beyoncé once said that she uses it to keep her eye brows in place. But the best use for this all-purpose balm, hands down, is on the lips -- it keeps them moist and also gives them a natural gloss.

4. Bach's Rescue Remedy - $9.95
This bitter liquid drop is made with pure flower essences, works like a natural Xanax and comes with one of those mini-turkey-baster-looking things. Good for taking on a plane or whenever feeling anxious, it's supposed to relax and mellow you out.

Créme de la Créme: Get Your Summer Skin on With Burt's Bees Radiant Body Lotion

By Carol Lee

burt's bees radiance lotionI’m not one of those people who “summer” away from where I live year round and I’m either working too much or too lazy to squeeze in much beach time. So whatever makes me chase away the summertime blues is pretty cool. And as the saying goes, it’s the little things that make you happy. One of those things for me is using body moisturizer with some subtle shimmer (yep, I know, it really doesn’t take much…). It’s a quick pick-me-up and an easy way to add some razzle-dazzle during the dog days of August. One of my favorite skincare companies Burt’s Bees (their beeswax lip balm has been a staple in my makeup bag for-evah!) just came out with a little sumthin’ sumthin’ called Radiant Body Lotion made with royal jelly.

When you put it on it’s smooth like buttermilk and smells like baby and honey, but the crème de la crème touch is that the mica in the lotion lends a coat of Hollywood red-carpet-ready shimmer. (FYI: mica is a group of shiny minerals and its usage goes as far back as cave paintings and as recent as toothpastes.) I’ve been using this after the shower before heading to work and I feel like a million bucks. How’s that for puttin’ on the ritz! $9. Get it here.

You know what else is really cool? Estée Lauder Body Performance Golden Naturally Radiant Moisturizer.

Créme de la Créme: Get Your Summer Skin in Order with Shiseido Suncare Trio

By Carol Lee

shiseido suncare

If you are really serious about shielding your precious face from pernicious rays, there is a plethora of specialized goodies for targeted protection. Shiseido, in case you didn’t know, is Japan’s first western-style pharmacy that’s 135 years old! They make great makeup but they also make mean suncare products. They’re easy to spot -- the whole skin care line comes in cool shimmery blue packaging. One of my all-time favorites is Shiseido Sun Protection Spray for Body and Hair SPF 16. This multi-functional spray will surely come in handy at the beach. Not only can you spritz it as you please all over your body, as a cherry on top, it works wonders for your hair, preventing dryness from the sun. I’ve been using this for a while and it’s one thing I always put in my beach tote along with a sunscreen. $26. Get it here.

Crème de la Crème: Get Your Summer Skin in Order with Estee Lauder Tinted Moisturizer

By Carol Lee

estee lauder tinted moisturizerI swear by tinted moisturizers in the summer! A good TM is the best multi-tasker you can have around in the sweltering days of heat and humidity. It moisturizes, lightly bronzes, conceals and protects all in one dab! Estée Lauder’s DayWear Plus Multi Protection Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15 does just that. Estée boasts this little beauty as their most powerful anti-oxidant cocktail that packs a big punch with South African red tea, grape seed, rice bran, rosemary, resveratol, vitamins C through E and little something called Eukarion, a synthetic anti-oxidant that fights aging. It is also smart enough to reflect light and use it to “create a subtle brightening effect.” In short, this baby is like Photoshop in a tube. Did I mention that it smells as cool as a cucumber and comes in four different shades? $35. Get it here.

Fashion Heads Up: MSG Does a Body Good

By Marya Spence

msg

Mami Suzuki is a culturally savvy, sprite little cookie of a clothing designer with a lot of talent up her sleeve. You'll want to know her name, because she's going to be big. Her NoLIta boutique MSG (which opened two weeks ago) is currently carrying her moderately priced, one-of-a-kind pieces which have graced both the shoulders of the Princess of Thailand and, yes, a regal few of us at PAPERMAG.

Originally from Tokyo, Mami is in New York on a mission to bring her Japanese, Southeast Asian, ‘70s disco and function-inspired pieces to the hub of American fashion. With its multiple influences, her style is incredibly unique -- but nothing in the store is beyond wearable. She has artfully structured wool suits and feminine chiffon blouses alongside a sparkling, champagne-hued, three-tiered dress -- a swingy disco confection I didn't want to take off. Then there's also the "Imelda" dress, named for the former Filipino First Lady, Imelda Romualdez Marcos. It's a platinum crepe, knee-length dress with detachable bouffant sleeves. Indeed, there's an intoxicating mix in this dress: it makes me feel equal parts delicate butterfly and powerful dictator. I feel suddenly pretty, yet secretly un-crushable.

Créme de la Créme: Get Your Summer Skin in Order with Hampton Sun Face Cream

By Carol Lee

hamptonsun face creamHampton Sun is the new cool kid on the sun care block (they launched in 2005) that’s won over the hard-to-please set of fashion editors and celebrities like Kelly Ripa, Sarah Jessica Parker and Renee Zellweger. And for good reasons… Their products are simple, chic and plant-based, and they don’t take basking in the sun lightly. After all, their slogan is “Smart Serious Sunbathing.” This posh sun-care line evokes the feeling of hanging out on the beaches of eastern Long Island -- even if you’re slumming it at Rockaway Beach you can skip the Jitney and fantasize that you’re in the Hamptons.

My new favorite is their daily facial moisturizer that is a yummy concoction of aloe vera, chamomile, peach, grape seed, cucumber, seaweed, ginger, lemon, vitamins A though E and anti-oxidants. It’s creamy and light, smells heavenly and comes in a cute white popsicle-like container with gold trim. Super Hydrating Face Cream SPF 15 does double duty at home (you can use it as a daily moisturizer) and at the beach. At $40 you get what you pay for which is a luxury facial sunscreen. Get it here.

You know what else is really cool? Dior Hydraction Visible Defense Light Creme SPF 20.

The iPhone-loving smarty-pantses at Clarins have come up with a skin cocktail that “protects skin from the electromagnetic waves produced by modern day communication devices” called Expertise 3P: Anti-Electromagnetic Waves & Urban Pollution Screen Mist, 3P standing for Poly Pollution Protection. This 3.4 oz spray shields your pretty face against biological stress, reinforces your skin’s natural barrier against "newly created environmental aggressors" and increases cellular energy. The Al Gore of skin care Expertise 3P is made with plants like thermus thermophillus, rhodiola rosea, white tea, succory dock-cress and glycofilm and has a subtle scent akin to Big Red. What’s more, it fights the universal enemies such as aging, dehydration and dullness at $40 a bottle. You can get it here.

Preen Cocktail Party at the Soho Grand

By Carol Lee

preen

A couple of nights ago I went to a cocktail party for the London design duo Preen in the garden at the Soho Grand. Joseph Quartana from Seven, the host of the night, held the court and greeted the guests dressed in severely cute outfits which is very much the Seven aesthetic -- nouveau new wave. In case you're not familiar with Preen's work, they make gorgeous, sharp, tailored dresses among other things. To give you an idea i pulled two of my favorite Preen dresses (above) from Seven's web site. And here are some photos of the major lookers at the party.

Fun Fashion in Montauk

By Kim Hastreiter

screaming mimi'sscreaming mimi's

Montauk is not the salty fishing town it once was. These days, you can see Ralph and Ricky Lauren riding through town in their old pickup truck and Mickey Drexler at the local supermarket picking up supplies. The fashion retail world has not yet invaded the outermost Hampton town yet, but there is one really fun spot that opened Memorial Day weekend for the summer. It's an outpost of our favorite New York vintage shop Screaming Mimi's!!! Check out these photos of their cute beach spot and stop by if you're on the Montauk Highway this summer!

Frisco Day Three

By Kim Hastreiter

yves08_t346.jpgI'm completely exhausted from running around yesterday, but it was a really fun day. I started the day off welcoming a few friends, Minda and John, who'd flown in from Minneapolis to join me in my crazy Frisco inspiration tour. We started out at the farmers market for breakfast, which consisted of ripe perfect peaches and homemade -- yes, homemade -- cottage cheese... I'm telling you, these food people are crazy here.

We then hopped over to the studio of the designer Yves Behar (he's the cute guy pictured at right), who gave us a fantastic tour of his company (called fusebox)'s headquarters. He is really a nice guy and I'd never really known all the stuff he has designed, but he showed us everything -- from his dildo designs in progress to his rubber shoes to his new chairs to watches to water bottles. But the most exciting thing we saw was the new super-inexpensive laptop design he created for the brilliant Nicholas Negroponte's "One Laptop per Child" project. I'd heard about this for quite a while, but to hold this $100 laptop in my hands (see photo at right), and see how cool it it and how amazingly it works (it's kind of like a mix between an iPod and a computer), was fabulous. (Read about the project here.) The deal with these laptops is that they are being sold in mass quantities to governments of countries in Africa and other nations where the kids live in villages with no electricity (or limited electricity) and have never even seen the Internet. Don't ask me how it works, but the computer itself actually creates wireless networks so all the kids can communicate with each other (with video and sound!) and can surf the net. It's AMAZING and is a huge success so far. behar.jpg

HELLO SAN FRANCISCO

By Kim Hastreiter

william scottwilliam tyler

I hopped to San Francisco for a few days (where I am now) to see my great friends Ben and Chris Ospital and to attend a benefit for some of my favorite artists in the world. The program is called Creative Growth, and I've been working with these guys on their advisory board for over 15 years. CG is an arts program for mentally handicapped adults and is located in Oakland. Ben and Chris, who own the coolest clothing store in San Fran called MAC (Modern Appealing Clothing), turned me onto Creative Growth decades ago. Since the first day I stepped into the industrial building in Oakland in the early '90s and met the artists and saw the amazing work they do, I was hooked. I have been collecting art and rugs since that day and have amassed quite a collection. The two artists I am especially taken with are William Tyler and William Scott -- see their work above.

So here I am. Ben and Chris know *everyone* in this town. They've had their store for over 25 years and are just culture vultures. I'm so lucky to know them because whenever I come to town they roll out the red carpet, and literally every hour of my time is spent doing something fabulous and new. They drag me around to meet amazing people -- from artists to chefs (that's a big thing here) to museum directors to gallerists to designers...

Live from the Manolo Blahnik Sample Sale

By PAPERMAG Editors

manolo blahnik

Here's a report from PAPER's shoe-obsessed account manager Michelle Lindsay...

The Manolo Blahnik biannual sample sale was this morning. For those of you who haven't been, it is a place where classy ladies get mean, evil and downright bitchy! While the doors open at 9 a.m., rabid Manolo-loving women and John (who is always the first one there, holding two seats) line up at 4 a.m.! My friends and I got there at the slightly-more-reasonable 6 a.m., where we sat in a room (seated according to the time you arrive) and waited for the Manolo girls to come and give us our "A," "B," "C," "D" or "E" ticket. "A" goes first; "E" goes last.

When the clock struck 9 a.m., the group headed to the door to be counted out one by one to go to the next room. This is where it got ugly. Women were pushing and shoving to get to the front of the line so they could be the first to enter into "Manolo Heaven,” a room filled to the brim with shoes ranging in price from $100-$500. The shoes were all piled up on tables according to size. This was my second time at the sale, so I knew the protocol and ran straight to the size 40 table. The trick is to grab as many Manolos as possible, rush to the middle of the room to dump them, while your friend keeps an eye out for you so you can go back for more. Then it’s time to sit down and try on the shoes. At this point, women are grabbing, taking and eyeing your goods, so you have to be very careful. But it’s not all evil at this event -- we had a close-knit group and we all watched each others’ backs and gave advice as to what looked good and what didn't.

All in all, this endeavor took about four hours, but it was well worth it. I love the shoes I got, and for price I paid, you better damn well believe I’ll do it all over again when the next sale rolls around!

More photos after the jump.

Sexy Salesman Sergei Is Back in Business at Jeffrey!

By Mickey Boardman

sergei mihailovShoppers rejoice!!! Mr. Mickey's longtime favorite high-fashion salesperson is back. The sexy and chic Sergei Mihailov was King of the third floor men's department at Barneys and always steered Mr. Mickey to the most fabulous looks. Well sadly Sergei left Barneys (fear not, MM has found solace in the arms of salesman HB!). He spent some time at Dior Homme but now has landed at Jeffrey, which is fabulous news! MM just stopped in Jeffrey (he was on 14th St. popping into Stella McCartney to buy this season's tote bag) and MM must say they are so sweet at Jeffrey. MM doesn't know if any of you remember that skit they used to do on SNL where they portrayed the kids at Jeffrey as snobby fashion snots. MM was always outraged because the people are sooooo sweet there! Anyhoo, see you in the Meat Packing District girls!!!

GAP's New Fashion Collectibles

By Kim Hastreiter

As many of you all saw from the giant ads all around town that appeared today, GAP has launched their special young designer capsule collection of white shirts and shirtdresses by the three CFDA/Vogue award winners: Doo-ri, Thakoon and Rodarte.

The stuff is CUTE, not to mention cheap, and I think super collectible and available today while the supplies last in GAP shops and on line where you can buy everything. When Roland Mouret did a little GAP line, the clothes sold out in what seemed to be a minute, so if you want some of this stuff my advice is to buy it right now.

Remember the blog I wrote two weeks ago about opening a shop that would sell all these low priced fabulous designer collabs, from Target to Uniglo to Top Shop to H&M? Well these GAP pieces need to be in our fantasy shop also! See how cute these white cotton 88 dollar dresses are (from l-r) Doo-ri, Rodarte, Thakoon. (There are also some really fab shirts available as well for 68 bucks each).

The Shopping Bug: Spring Wedges & Summer Sandals

By Carol Lee

miu miu, prada, jimmy choo, a.p.c.

Although it doesn't feel anything close to balmy, technically it is spring and around this time of the year I always start thinking about shoes that you wear sans socks. I've been doing some research (that means eye-shopping and no actual buying) on spring fling shoes at Jeffrey, Miu Miu, Intermix (secretly every girl I know checks out Intermix) and online department stores.

The three big things I saw everywhere and by every designer for spring/summer are patent leather, peep toes and ankle straps. I'm really feeling the shiny leather look since everything I love ends up being patent. Peep toes I'm not too crazy about but they can work as both casual and dressy, and they give your toes some ventilation. But I really don't care for ankle straps. I think they are uncomfortable (like they're going to cut off your blood circulation any sec) and they are hard to pull off no matter how leggy you might be.

Mr. Mickey's New Stella McCartney Bag!!!

By Mickey Boardman

Mr. Mickey's got a new bag! Mr. Mickey was out pounding the pavements on a million appointments last Thursday and found himself with a few minutes to kill in the Meat Packing district. Well MM was tired of his fabulous but slightly threadbare Marni tote bag so he popped into Stella McCartney to see what was cooking in the man-purse department.

You regular MMBloggers know that Mr. Mickey is a cruelty-free cutie and wears no animal products, so Stella -- the queen of cruelty free high fashion -- is a perfect fit for MM. Five minutes later MM was walking down 14th Street carrying this charming and delightful tote bag. MM still has his eye on a silver man-purse that's more formal so we'll keep you posted on that one. MM is including a close-up photo of the bag so you can really see the cute detail.

Sneak Peek at Looks from Kate Moss for Topshop

By Carol Lee

kate moss, topshop

Kate Moss for Topshop is almost here (Yayee!) -- May 1st. I can't think of a non-designer who's more qualified to have her own collection than Kate Moss. She is the most fantabulous model of our time and is a bona-fide style icon who arguably has more influence on how young women want to dress than Anna Wintour. So needless to say, it is so exciting to see what Miss Moss has pulled from the lot of her own favorite outfits to cull together a line for Topshop this spring! Here's a sneak peek at the best of the Kate Moss for Topshop look book which is all about Kate and her BFF Irina Lazareanu playing dress-up!! Hint: Expect signature Kate Moss items such as cropped skinny jeans, tuxedo vests, vingtage-esque mini-dresses and an overall rock 'n' roll, sexy vibe with a splash of modern boheme.

And go to this web site (katemosstopshop.com) for more on Kate and Irina!!!

p.s. For those of us who are not going to be across the Atlantic near a real Topshop store, you can go nuts on their web site.
