Caribbean Fashion Week: Runway Wrap-up
By Carol Lee
There are more photos in this gallery. View them all.

What I saw on and off the runway during Caribbean Fashion Week exceeded whatever I might have anticipated -- both the good and the bad. The fashion was as diverse as it could be, from the sexy little bikinis to dancehall get-ups, to black-tie-worthy gowns. When the designers hit the right notes they were as grand as anything you might see in big cities like New York. But what they didn't have was big city time management and organization. Of course, one does not go to Jamaica necessarily expecting those qualities -- it has other things to offer. However, when you're aspiring to be a player on a global platform and invite guests from around the world, it's bit of a shame that they fell short of making the best impression. Having said that, I think Jamaica is still awesome and I would go back, fashion or not. Here's the last batch of ensembles and models that made the experience all a worth while.

Caribbean Fashion Week: The Making of the Runway
By Carol Lee

Friday night was the first night of runway shows. They were scheduled to begin at 7 but everyone knew they wouldn't because fashion shows almost always start late and Jamaica would be no exception. But things got a little surreal when at 9 they were still building the runway. Many of the front row people got high off of the cement glue the workers used to put down the white boards. Not the most fun way to kill time.

Lacoste Is a Wintery Wonderland!
By Mickey Boardman

Mr. Mickey is a hardcore Lacoste lover (MM was horrified when his mother asked if she could substitute Polo shirts for the Lacostes he'd request for Christmas. Needless to say he ended up with Lacostes!)
Anyhoo the show is always an extravaganza, and this year's was very white and blonde Winter Olympics in Garmisch Partenkirchen, if you know what MM is saying. Let's get some color in the castings kids! Fashion-wise this show is always fabulous. Alek de Betak does the production and the foamy snow was wonderful (unless you were TV personality Finola Hughes who was sitting right next to the snow machine!). The models came out in bunches and were styled adorabley. Above and after the jump are some snaps.

Thank God for Galliano
By Kim Hastreiter

No matter how jaded I get or skeptical of the fashion world, John Galliano blows my mind every single time by how far he takes his art and craft. And his couture shows are the pinnacle of what high fashion is all about for me. His world of extreme fantasy is mind boggling and amazing and his couture show was in my mind the only thing to see in Paris. Its worth looking at every single demented, outrageous, extravagant, amazing look on style.com, so go check it out. Pictured above are a few of my favorite looks. Can you believe how fabulous he is?

From the Archives: Project Runway's Elisa Jimenez
By Alexis Swerdloff

You may recognize her as the Project Runway contestant known for regularly dropping the word “polymorphic,” spitting on her fabric, and generally being portrayed as the “out there” one… but to us PAPER peeps, Elisa Jimenez is a super-talented designer who has been a member of the PAPER family for over a decade. We took a little trip down PAPER archive lane to bring you some Elisa Jimenez nuggets from years past -- a piece from when she was a Beautiful Person back in 2001 (and described by Mickey Boardman as “the kind of person who speaks rhapsodically about 'the golden mean of humanity' and other deep concepts seemingly foreign to the rag trade”) and PAPERMAG coverage of her various fashion shows.

My New Favorite Dress
By Kim Hastreiter

I got so involved in my triangle playing, I forgot to effuse about the last show in New York I saw right before I left for the airport. It was the Anne Klein show designed by my wonderful friend Isabel Toledo. Not only was the show gorgeous and so chic, but Isabel has given an incredible gift to Anne Klein. She has given the AK label one of her most signature brilliant dresses. It is a simple shirtwaist dress that Isabel herself wears almost every day (see photo of Isabel below). Made of either silk or sheer lightly woven cotton, Toledo ties these dresses into tight little balls and dyes them this way and somehow permanently krinkles them. They have a little turned up collar and are simply perfect. I met the president of Anne Klein after the show and I told him to fasten his seatbelt because I think this dress can be bigger than DVF's wrap dress if they market it right. Everyone will want them. They can be rolled up into a ball and crammed in a suitcase. They can be made in dressy versions or casual versions. They can be worn with strappy high heels or sandals with a leather jacket thrown over them. They are so so so chic. Picture above are just a few versions Isabel showed at Anne Klein last week.

New Zealand Fashion Week: Rachel Hunter, Alt TV, Stolen Girlfriends Club & Kate Sylvester
By Carol Lee

Day 4, Thursday, Sept. 20, 8:44 a.m.
I was supposed to do a live interview at 8:30 for NZ’s morning TV show called “Good Morning.” But I got a call at 7:30 a.m. that it was cancelled. I was bumped due to a missing Chinese lady in Auckland which has been the biggest front-page news here for the past few days. Oh well. I wish I had known about it before I woke up at the crack of dawn to iron my dress! My first show was at 12 but I stayed awake and did some work. It’s going to be a long day. Kitty came to fetch me around 11:30.
The group show “VERGE Breakthrough: Blak Basics, Elusiv, Euinton” consisted of three designers showing back to back. It was rather underwhelming on the whole but Elusiv, a menswear line stood out with hot models and well-tailored pieces that looked luxurious and modern.
Then I had an interview with Rachel Hunter for her new swimwear line Lola on a rental boat -- or launch, as the Kiwis say here. We had to take off our shoes because the launch owner was anal. Rachel was a bit late so we huddled around chatting with Megan (Lola’s co-designer), Robert (a fashion commentator for Maori TV) and her publicist Lou. When she arrived with her cute teenage daughter and son in tow, Rachel seemed a bit stressed out. Apparently the kids were fighting. She was dressed very casual and hardly wore any makeup but still looked great -- like a model. The interview was short and sweet. Rachel was down to earth and seemed nervous about the show and being judged (more on the interview later).

Luella Bartley Rocks as Always
By Mickey Boardman

Mr. Mickey was DEVASTATED that Luella Bartley didn't show in NYC this past Fashion Week. The UK native went back to London and gave her usual super-cool, super-cute show. Honestly, how adorable are these little dresses? Mr. Mickey wishes he was a punky little 14-year-old girl so he could wear these dresses to school dances, get high in the bathroom and make out inappopriately with male teaching staff members!!!! Too bad we're only young once! Mr. Mickey has a bunch of accessories that Luella did for Target and they rock. Although the tote bag covered with cherries is a challenge for Mr. Mickey. Even though MM is a clown, there's something so attention-grabbing about the cherries bag. Or maybe it's just too young lady for a granny like Mr. Micks!

New Zealand Fashion Week: Deborah Sweeney, Cybéle, Sera Lilly, Love-Lies-Bleeding & Nom*D
By Carol Lee

Day 2: Tuesday, Sept 18, 4:35 a.m.
Today was the first day of New Zealand Fashion Week: Autumn/Winter 2008 Collections (They're two seasons ahead of us -- it's spring right now). I went to Deborah Sweeney, Cybéle, Sera Lilly & Love-Lies-Bleeding and Nom*D -- four out of eight shows ain’t bad. This is only a fraction of the volume of New York Fashion Week and I’m liking it! All the shows (except for a couple of off-site ones by the most well-known NZ designers like Karen Walker, Kate Sylvester and Zambesi) are happening at the tents where the party was last night.
This is NZ’s seventh Fashion Week, but it still has the bubbliness and the quaintness (I don’t mean this in a patronizing way) that reminds me of my very first Fashion Week in New York in 2000 when PAPER did this thing called "Lab, Launch Pad and Lounge" at the Bryant Park tents. I was just a bright-eyed intern then and had so much fun running around trying to figure out what the hell was going on. Like in Y2K, here I don’t know who anyone is or what’s going on but I have an assistant and Audis at my disposal. I love not knowing! Everything is a discovery and it’s so fresh!!

Gareth Pugh's Latest, More Wearable Looks!
By Mickey Boardman

London Fashion Week is in full swing and Mr. Mickey's new motto is "It's always Fashion Week somewhere in the world!" Consequently, we at PAPERMAG.com and the PAPERMAG blogs going to cover more more more Fashion Week hijinks and shenanigans. You've already ready about Carol Lee's fun in New Zealand! Carol got a little cranky on the flight it seems!! Well, as Mr. Mickey gears up to do some blogging live via satellite from Paris, France, tune into the blogs for some reports from London and Milan (and Auckland).
Meanwhile in London, our friend Gareth Pugh is up to his usual madness. Although compared to some of his past stuff, this show is actually wearable!

It's Almost Fashion Week and Mr. Mickey Misses the Jane Girls!
By Mickey Boardman
You all know that the delightful Jane magazine went bye-bye and although Mr. Mickey has had lots of time to get over it, the old wound is reopening because it's Fashion Week. Fashion Week is to editors what Spring Break is to drunken sluts. It's where we all get to see each other, catch up and work our pussies! Well Brandon, Julia, Kusum and Heather from Jane were some of my favorite Fashion Week friends, both in New York and Paris, France! Mr. Mickey won't get into too much detail but we had a particularly cuckoo crazy time telling bathroom stories at the Alexander McQueen show! Who will enjoy my new Popo stories?
Always trying to look on the bright side, perhaps having these girls temporarily off the scene might mean a little upward movement for MM in terms of seating at Marc Jacobs! You all know MM's entire self worth is based on his seat at Marc Jacobs (are you reading this KCD?) and with the Jane girls regrouping, Mr. Mickey might make it down to row three!!!! Let's keep our fingers crossed!

Sexclowns!
By Kim Hastreiter

I got an email this morning from my old friend, Belgian designer Walter Von Beirendonck, whom I have not heard from in ages. He sent me some pix from his last collection which he aptly called his "Sexclown" collection. Walter's brightly-colored, pop, cartoon work has always been slightly off-trend in his home town of Antwerp, the capital of deconstructive fashion, (his aesthetic is more like Castelbajac than Martin Margiela), but he's stuck to his guns and his work has developed a true following. Pictured above are a couple of funny looks from his last Sexclown show.

Preen Cocktail Party at the Soho Grand
By Carol Lee

A couple of nights ago I went to a cocktail party for the London design duo Preen in the garden at the Soho Grand. Joseph Quartana from Seven, the host of the night, held the court and greeted the guests dressed in severely cute outfits which is very much the Seven aesthetic -- nouveau new wave. In case you're not familiar with Preen's work, they make gorgeous, sharp, tailored dresses among other things. To give you an idea i pulled two of my favorite Preen dresses (above) from Seven's web site. And here are some photos of the major lookers at the party.

My Favorite Dress
By Kim Hastreiter
I saw a photo of this dress yesterday in WWD and I can't stop looking at it. It is a dress Isabel Toledo designed for her resort collection for Anne Klein. I think it is so beautiful -- the puce color, the drape, the length, the proportions. Even the shoes. It's so "goddess" in the best sense of the word. And I think its so modern also. I was so excited to see such a beautiful piece because I feel like Isabel is getting her sea legs at AK is really going to sock it to us next season. Isn't it beautiful?

Alberta Ferretti Hearts NYC
By Mickey Boardman

Italian designer Alberta Ferretti has been giving New York City a lot of love and attention lately. She did a presentation for her Philosophy line during last Fashion Week and last week she did an intimate runway show for her Cruise collection. Naturally the glamour pusses were in attendance including Vogue's Anna Wintour (pictured with the designer) and one of MMBlog's favorite international girls, designer Coco Brandolini. We love it when the Europeans come to town!

Thom Browne Does Brooks Brothers
By Kim Hastreiter
Stopped into Brooks Brothers yesterday afternoon to see a very cute show of the new Thom Browne and Brooks Brothers collaboration. It was held in the very masculine top floor showroom at their Madison Ave. flagship. Although not as crazy as Browne's personal collection (see this month's issue of PAPER!), the clothes were definitely a huge leap into the 21st century for Brooks Brothers, a store that has such amazing heritage but has just ignored the young modern man for the past three decades.
Finally gays and just plain cute hip straight guys will have a reason to shop here at Brooks Brothers, a store that hasn't seen a slender trouser or hipster look as long as I've been alive.
Browne also showed a tandem women's collection, which was equally, if not even more cute. Browne did just what any hipster should do with Brooks Brothers: He celebrated the brand's history with classics like the business suit (only Browne's had skinny legs, skinny ties and fab down-vests made of herring bone) and tuxedos (Browne did a cape version and a sweater version as well!). He also married the heritage of Brooks Brothers' classic wooly men's fabrics, applying them to his modern silhouettes and odd-length pants, bermudas and jackets.

Mr. Mickey Loves Chloe!
By Mickey Boardman

Mr. Mickey is back from fashion week in Paris and despite some blog construction, MM is ready to tell you kids what he thinks. And what he thinks is this: Chloe is gorgeous!!! As all you style lovers already know, Paulo Melim Andersson has taken over the reigns at Chloe, a house whose past designers are a real who's who of fashion giants: Karl Lagerfeld, Stella McCartney and Phoebe Philo. Andersson comes from Marni, another of Mr. Mickey's favorite fashion lines. The new Chloe is still very ingenue, which Chloe girls love, but harder. MM can't say he lives for the Doc Martens-style shoes but I'm sure the kids will love it!

My favorite beauty trend for men from Milan Fashion Week had to be the boys wearing fake-suntans at the Moschino show!!! Check these guys out.

Margiela's Influence Is All Over the Runways
By Kim Hastreiter
Martin Margiela may still be working on the fringes of fashion (although they are backed big time by the visionary Renzo Rosso of Diesel fame), but I often see his cuckoo ideas appropriated by other designers. This season, Viktor and Rolf sent models down the catwalk with their necks connected to crazy metal contraptions similar to orthopedic surgical braces mixed with motorized dry cleaning racks (see far left photo from style.com). Margiela did a similar thing a few years ago (second from left). Rei Kawakubo had a fabulous collection this season of cotton candy pastel kiddie easter clothes. Her dresses sewn on dresses (third from left) were also reminiscent of a Margiela idea from the past (at right). But it's never been a secret that Kawakubo adores Margiela... He is her favorite designer!

Yohji Pokes Fun at LV
By Kim Hastreiter
Yohji Yamamoto had such a great show in Paris. But the elephant in the room which people weren't talking about was how Yohji appropriated and poked fun at the Louis Vuitton logos on his threads (photos from style.com). Vuitton is usually quite sensitive about people knocking them off in any way whatsoever... I wonder if there will be any repercussions... I can't imagine LV suing Yohji! Check it out. It's obviously completely tongue in cheek -- or chic, rather.
