Knitting Factory Relocation Rumors
By Meagan Brant

So you know how Brooklyn Vegan reported yesterday that the Knitting Factory's moving to the East Village? It’s true… kind of. Even though the venue is applying for a full liquor license at 504-508 E. 14th St., Gene over at Knitting Factory told me, “it’s one of the many places we’re looking at.” With their current lease at Leonard Street ending in 2009 (and their current liquor license ending in October of this year), I guess they’re finally succumbing to the reality of the move. They’ve been redefining the downtown music scene for more than two decades, so hopefully they won’t stray too far.

MC Hammer: Not Dead
By David Hershkovits

Appparently this post on the PAPER magazine http://www.myspace.com/papermagazine">MySpace page isn't true: "MC Hammer ( Kirk Burrell), Pop Rap icon of the 90's, passed away today in a Baltimore hospital room outside a Tribe Called Quest show in New Jersey last night, the singer was struck by a car passing by the front of the Ventura Theatre. Brunswick police say that the driver allegedly stopped, but then fled the scene. There is now a police investigation underway.
"Hammer was rushed to St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, where he was pronounced dead this morning at 6am. This is a tragedy for the underground music as a whole and we need to stand together at this time of loss."
Instead yahoo news reports
"MC Hammer is not dead, his representatives have insisted, after reports of the star's untimely demise swept the media."The well-being of the infamous '80s pop singer turned rapper has been the subject of some speculation in recent days.
However, it has now been confirmed that the recent death of a man with the same name -- Stanley Burrell -- has prompted the uncertainty.
A spokesperson for Hammer, who enjoyed little chart success after his breakthrough debut single, "U Can't Touch This," has insisted he is very much alive and well.
He is apparently set to make a new stab at fame with an internet project called DanceJam, which will see him judging videos of people dancing."

Harry & Chelsy's Airport Reunion
By Mickey Boardman
Prince Harry and his girlfriend Chelsy Davy had a reunion after not seeing each other for months. The happy coming together happened at Heathrow Airport when Chelsea flew to London from Johannesburg. Harry came to the airport to pick up Chels, but was an hour late making his lady love twiddle her thumbs till he got there. Many royalty-watchers insist Harry and Chelsy are heading to the altar and that Chelsy will become a royal princess before Kate Middleton! Mr. Mickey likes Chelsy, but thinking about it from an adult and responsible perspective, one has to ask: Are these two wild children good for each other?

Jake Gyllenhaal: First Brokeback, Now Broadway!
By Whitney Spaner
Looks like Jake Gyllenhaal is going to be making his debut on Broadway this fall in a play called Farragut North, about Howard Dean's 2004 run for the White House. He took part in a reading of the play (written by Beau Willimon, who worked for Dean during his campaign), in which he took on the role of Dean's communications director, last week. According to the Post's Michael Riedel, Jake will decide by the end of this week whether or not he's going to be making the Broadway committment.
Jake also has a movie coming out in October with Reese Witherspoon, Meryl Streep and Alan Arkin called Rendition, about a terrorist suspect who is secretly detained by the government.
I'm glad Jake is coming out with these two (possibly) big government-related projects. I'm tired of only seeing him in spandex biking shorts! He looks snazzy in a suit!

Queen Camilla?
By Mickey Boardman

Not long ago Mr. Mickey read reports that those close to the Prince of Wales say the Prince is firm in his plans to have Camilla made Queen once he himself takes the throne. Now Mr. Mickey feels 1950s enough even talking about the monarchy because it's so un-modern but MM really feels like a Republican housewife (the political party not the anti-monarchy form of government) when he talks like he's about to talk. Now Mr. Mickey thinks everyone deserves to be happy and MM knows that Charles didn't ask to be born the heir to the throne. Still, we all have to play the hand we're given. And making Camilla the Queen is JUST WRONG according the rules of the royal family.
MM could go on and on and one but is getting upset even typing out this blog so let's just leave it at that!

The Giant Claw On DVD!!!
By Dennis Dermody
A little bird told me (and it hasn't been officially announced yet) that this fall we will be able to own the DVD of one of the most ludicrous '50s monster movies: The Giant Claw. Starring Jeff Morrow (This Island Earth) & Mara Corday, this 1957 howler has the distinction of a giant buzzard terrorizing the world that looks just like Big Bird. Actually Big Bird is scarier... Hear that this will be part of a box set with other gems!

New Baby for Louis of Luxembourg and Tessy Anthony
By Mickey Boardman

Prince Louis of Luxembourg set some tongues wagging when he married his pregnant girlfriend Tessy Anthony last year. Well the unofficial word is that Tessy is pregnant again so their little son Gabriel will soon have a brother or sister. Here are photos of Louis and Tessy at a recent public appearance.

Prince Albert and Charlene Wittstock: Together Again?
By Mickey Boardman

Chronic bachelor Albert of Monaco popped up with what MMBlog thought was his ex-girlfriend, South African swimmer Charlene Wittstock. They began hanging out in public around the time of the 2006 Olympics in Torino and tongues wagged that Charlene would achieve that which parades of beauties before her had sought: the title Princess of Monaco. Then Charlene disappeared from the scene. And now she's back! MM naturally wishes these two the best, but if we're being perfectly honest, MM must admit that he hopes Albert never marries and the throne passes to the children of his sister, Caroline, Princess of Hanover. MM is sorry but the idea of a Prince Andrea is too good!!!!

Lily Allen Cancels North American Tour
By Shanon Kelley

The music community is all a buzz buzz buzz about Lily Allen, who just cancelled pretty much all of her North American tour. There have been rumors for a while concerning her immense home-sickness and reluctance to completely devote herself to her "music career," but this seals the deal. She wrote on her MySpace page the following:
"Hey Guys, I'm writing to tell you that I have cancelled many of my May and June tour commitments in America. The reason for this, is because my mummy and daddy are very rich, and I have never been in a position where i have actually had to do any hard work before. I thought that being a popstar meant going out getting trashed with famous people and sleeping in all day. The fact that this is not true has come as a huge dissapiontment [sic] to me, and as a result I am throwing the towel in.
No but seriously, I have been on tour with this album for a year now, I have fulfilled every commitment up to this point. I am tired, but more than that I don't think I have been giving my best performances recently. I have been getting really drunk because i've been so nervous about doing bad shows, and I don't want people spending money on a going to see a show that isn't the best it could be. I am not falling apart at the seems, I am not suffering with exhaustion, I am not pregnant, and I am not going to rehab. I will be here in America, promoting the album and also starting to write the second album, which I am beyond excited about. The LA and New York shows will still be happening, and I am still playing Coachella and Bonaroo and all the other festivals.
I'd like to apologise [sic] to anyone who has bought tickets, but you can get your money back, if you take 'em back to the place you bought them from."
And there you have it!

Prince Harry and Chelsy Davy in Barbados!
By Mickey Boardman
Headline grabber Prince Harry was in Barbados two weeks ago with his Zimbabwean girlfriend Chelsy Davy. They went to the cricket world cup and lounged in what will be their last days together before Harry, who is a soldier, heads off to Iraq. Newspapers reported recently that Harry was making out with some hussy in a club but Chelsy seems to not be bothered by the scandalous publicity they both receive.
Mr. Mickey must say that he really has a warm spot in his heart for Chelsy. She's fun and cute and modern. Sadly her father is in bed with one of the biggest scumbags today, Robert Mugabe, President of Zimbabwe.
Harry, the younger son of the late Diana, Princess of Wales is lovable but has a habit of doing really stupid things like wearing a Nazi uniform to a costume party and getting wasted in public and accosting photographers. Ah the kids today!

Prince William and Kate Middleton are Over?
By Mickey Boardman

Is it really over? Reliable sources (People Magazine and Perez Hilton!) are reporting that the world's most eligible bachelor, Prince William of Wales and his girlfriend of 5 years, Kate Middleton, have broken up! Too bad for the souveneir companies that had already produced truckloads of commemorative dishes celebrating the engagement that never happened. Here at MMBlog we like Ms. Middleton and we're excited about the possibility of a wedding for Wills at a young age. Well now maybe he can go out with Charlotte Casiraghi!!!!

Time Out New York Reveals Broadway's Dirty Little Secrets
By Whitney Spaner

I love this week’s Time Out with the 20 dirty secrets about New York theater. TONY’s theater editors David Cote and Adam Feldman plus Kirk Miller and Robert Simonson put together the list and there are some very funny tips, great advice and a column of blind items that has been driving me nuts all day! For example; “Which box-office magnet is much closer to his male assistant (now his business partner) than his much publicized wife?” If anyone out there in the blogosphere knows the answer please don’t hesitate to clue me in!
Here are my favorite secrets from the list:
#1: "Actors are obsessed with gossip." This entry namechecks the Post’s theater columnist Michael Riedel as outing most of the gossip on Broadway. Apparently the British and big-headed director, David Leveaux, once knocked Riedel off a barstool for writing something not so nice. I love it!
#10: "Chorus Girls are Gorgeous -- From Afar." This seems especially true for Curtains.
And maybe one of the most useful tips:
#20: "Never see a show after its first year." This is the reason I have not and will never see Hairspray. It’s a shame but by the time I made my way to the Big Apple, Harvey Fierstein was no longer playing Edna Turnblad and I refuse to go to see an endless string of American Idols and failed pop stars play Penny Pingleton and Amber Von Tussle while sitting next to a fanny packed mom and her candy-chewing children.
Here’s Time Out's double cover featuring the stars of Wicked and Phantom of the Opera.

Why is Socialite Rank So Mean To Olivia Palermo?
By Mickey Boardman

Mr. Mickey loves harmony. He's a Libra, after all (with Leo rising and moon in Sagitarrius). Also MM is a sucker for anyone who is nice to him. Still Mr. Mickey can't understand the sudden anti-Olivia Palermo backlash which seems to be fueled by one of MM's favorite websites, SocialiteRank.com. MM j'adores Socialite Rank and thinks they do an amazing job covering the social scene. Still, Olivia has always been very nice and friendly (to MM at least) and gorgeous. What has she ever done to deserve disdain? There are always going to be new cuties on the block and MM doesn't see how the new girls have done anything different that the superstars of the society scene did when they started out. MM just loves everybody (well not everybody, there are a few that MM thinks are phonies!!!) So someone please either explain to MM what Olivia did wrong or be nice to the girl!!!

Mercury Lounge to Maybe Probably Shut Down
By PAPERMAG Editors
I'm sitting at home with two horrible earaches (one in each ear!) but this late breaking news just couldn't wait! A coworker and close personal friend just texted me the alarming rumor that the world renowned Lower East Side music venue, The Mercury Lounge, will be closing it's doors in the near future. According to New Media Feed, the reason for the shut down is linked to real estate development. Raises in rent and plans for high-rise luxury condos have already forced out other key venues in the neighborhood such as the Luna Lounge (which re-located to Brooklyn) and Sin-e (which will shut its doors soon).
Say it isn't so! The Mercury Lounge is my favorite venue by far and has always been seen as the spot for upcoming bands to perform. Many have gotten their start there, including The Strokes. I mean, sure, it's not as historically devastating as the end of CBGB's, but it's definitely in my top 5 list of The Worst Possible Things That Could Happen.
While I'm kinda skeptical that this rumor is true -- due to the fact that Bowery Inc., which owns the Merc, brings in so much money – the shutting-down of this Houston Street venue could also account for why Bowery Inc. bought out North Six last year and are in the process of renovating that space. Bloomberg for President?
By David Hershkovits

If you're sick of the Republicans and the Democrats, you might find solace in the thought that New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg is giving serious consideration to throwing his hat in the ring as a third party candidate. Rev. Al Sharpton calls him "Ross Perot with a resume." Even though he hosted their convention in New York, he is not considered a viable Republican candidate as the Washington Post points out: "He supports gun control, has raised taxes, backs same-sex marriage and signed a law banning the use of trans fats in fast-food restaurants. The mayor once filed suit on behalf of the city against two dozen gun dealers." What he does have is money, lots of it. Like $5.5 billion. Which allows him to play it coy for now as he waits to see how the candidates hold up in the early stages of the campaign.
Even as he officially denies his interest saying, "How can a 5-foot-7, divorced billionaire Jew running as an independent from New York possibly have a chance?" Bloomberg has bigger problems than fudging his height. The New York Times, a strong supporter of the Mayor, is leading an investigation into a secret spy unit that was organized when New York City hosted the Republican convention. "A review by our colleague Jim Dwyer of court records and some of the still-secret documents tells a stunning story. The police may have overreached and misused surveillance authority in a wide undercover effort to head off disruptions. In the months leading to the convention, officers were dispatched around the United States, and to Canada and Europe. The so-called R.N.C. Intelligence Squad, run with the help of a former senior C.I.A. official, was supposed to sniff out potential troublemakers, but it seems to have spent a lot of effort infiltrating and compiling dossiers on groups that clearly posed no danger.
The Mayor is fighting the public release of the surveillance records. Continues the Times editorial: "The mayor sometimes does not quite seem to have made the transition from running a privately owned company, in which his word was law, to leading a major city, in which the voters serve as both board of directors and major shareholders."

Is Zara Phillips Secretly Engaged?
By Mickey Boardman
MM has been spending a lot of time recently at his favorite blog for upper crust British tidbits, Aristocracy Anecdotes, which is where he picked up this little nugget of info. According to Mail on Sunday writer Katie Nicholl, a 'mole' in the Palace reports that the Queen's granddaughter and BBC sport personality of the year Zara Phillips is secretly engaged to her hunky rugby player boyfriend Mike Tindall. According to Nicholl, the mole says the couple has been talking to the Palace about the appropriate time to make the announcement and it looks like August is the time. Zara, a successful equestrian, hopes to compete in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
