Party Train: Summer Is Awesome!

summer party

I LOVE summertime in New York City -- so much fun stuff to do! I've been a total spaz running around from this to that. My brain is too fried from the heat, so without much ado, here's a visual recap of all the fiestas I've been hitting up.

About Last Night... Fergie Squared and Other Glamour Girls

By Mickey Boardman

fergie and fergie

Last night two of our favorites came together. We're talking about a little Fergie on Fergie fun! Last year when we had Fergie (the former Stacy Ferguson) perform at our Nightlife Awards, it was our fantasy to have Fergie (the former Duchess of York) introduce her. Well that didn't happen. Until last night at Cipriani Wall Street at the party Deutsche Bank hosted for Cipriani's concert series to benefit Unicef and Sarah Ferguson's Foundation.

Meanwhile, around town, the kids lined up around the block for the Rembrandt tooth whitener party. Confusing I know, but it was worth it to hear the fabulous DJ stylings of Samantha Ronson and to chat with hostess Rashida Jones who's so cute and fun. Honestly Samantha gets cuter every time I see her. Rashida was in town for the TV Up Fronts and talked about the 'fun' of basically being on a receiving line as boozed up guys in suits come up to her and are obnoxious. The glamour of show biz!

About Last Night... 3 Arts Entertainment Hosts TV Upfronts After-Party at The Grand

By Alexis Swerdloff

rebecca romijn jerry o'connell kelsey grammerUpfronts season is an exciting time, people; a time when all the major networks head to New York City and pitch their fall shows to advertisers, who they must woo with big and fancy, star-studded parties. We went to one such shindig on Tuesday night at The Grand, way up on E. 58th St. This one wasn't as much star-studded as it was filled with comedians and sitcom writers who we recognized: Aziz Ansari, Nick Kroll, Jordan Carlos et. al... Everyone seemed to be loosening their ties, as it were, throwing back their vodka beverages loosely and freely. There were also some celebs: Debra Messing (who seemed to have a cast on her wrist), Rebecca Romijn, Jerry O'Connell, Kelsey Grammer, Horatio Sanz, and Lonny Ross from 30 Rock!

Here is a photo of Jerry, Rebeca, Kelsey's wife and Kelsey, snapped by PAPER's very own Caroline Torem Craig...

Art Attack: "Dig Cunt" & Creative Time's B-Day Party at the Bowery Hotel

By Carol Lee

gelitin

This weekend, I headed out to Coney Island to check out Gelitin's "Dig Cunt" project. The unpredictable Austrian collective decided to dig three six-foot-plus holes on the beach everyday (then cover them at the end of the day) for a week as part of Creative Time's 33rd Anniversary bonanza. The whole concept seems Zen in a very western sort of way. It was such a fun time to be out on Coney with gorgeous weather and a mellow crowd, that is until I almost lost an arm on the bumper car.

Creative Time has really been celebrating its birthday in style. Last Thursday, they threw a big benefit auction/dinner at the chic Bowery Hotel. One of the honorees was Amanda Burden who looked smashing in a strapless red number. Co-host of the night David Byrne (the other was Debbie Harry), clad in a flamingo pink suit, worked the lottery cage and greeted the guests in his sweet but shy way. Artists whose work raised the most money were Vik Muniz ($62,000, live auction) and Matthew Barney ($15,000, silent auction). My favorite encounter of the night was the Vietnam Veterans Memorial architect Maya Lin. She is so ageless! Well, congratulations to you, Creative Time and here's to another 33 years!

Donatella Versace Smells Nice!

By Mickey Boardman

donatella versace at saksOne of Mr. Mickey's favorite blondes, Ms. Donatella Versace, made a little appearace at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York City to introduce her new fragrance Versace. DV is looking particularly slim these days and Mr. Mickey needs to lay his hands on her diet because MM is so fat he's about to explode!!!!

About Last Night... Kirsten, Cameron & Jessica at the Met's Costume Institute Gala

By Alexis Swerdloff

jessica simpson

Here's a report and photos from our nightlife photographer Caroline Torem Craig, who was out till 4 a.m. (!) last night covering the celeb-studded Costume Institute Gala at the Met....

The spectacle of a huge birdcage filled with living peacocks (and -- thank God -- not disco dancers) greeted the fabulous fashionistas at the annual spring gala last night.

A massive tent to end all tents housed photographers, reporters and videographers, who were all clamoring to record and report the arrivals of our current kings and queens of Fashion.

As the red carpet was fast and furiously polluted with publicists, it was such a challenge to photograph this rapidly moving feast. If one was concentrating on Cameron Diaz or a voluptuous, brunette Jessica Simpson (pictured above, with Roberto Cavalli), one was inadvertently ignoring the camera-shy Kate Moss or Donatella Versace.

It wasn't until a whole bank of photographers booed and screamed at Kirsten Dunst that she stopped for a brief moment, to allow a few photos to be taken.

Each year, there are a few sights that "shall remain" and this year, one was Lucy Liu in a Zac Posen creation. Liu's train, hand manipulated at every other step by Zac himself, turned into a walking portrait. It was poetry in motion.

About Last Night... Lambchops and Jazzy Jeff

By PAPERMAG Editors

Devon Dikeou

By special PAPERMAG correspondent Gary Pini:

Upfront full discloser: We went to the after-party but not to the film screening. More on the missed film in a second, but first back to the start of the evening. Carlo McCormick and I went to an artsy SoHo party for the latest issue of Zing magazine at the Grand Street loft of the magazine's publisher Devon Dikeou. Devon is also an artist and chef who had prepared some delicious lamb chops (see photo above). We got into an argument/discussion about whether or not a chef could be an artist when I announced that the curators for this year's version of Documenta. in Germany had invited the acclaimed Spanish chef Adria Ferran to participate. I say it's valid.

Reporting from the Front Lines of the Vanity Fair Tribeca Film Fest Party

By Alexis Swerdloff

robert deniro, grace hightower, iman, david bowie

PAPER nightlife photographer Caroline Torem Craig is the nightlife photographer to end all nightlife photographer. Here's her report from the Vanity Fair's Tribeca Film Festival opening night party the other night:

jessica seinfeld, Narciso RodriguezOn a warm and breezy Monday evening, celebrities ascended the beautifully-dressed Supreme Court steps (I am referring to hundreds of tiny candles and orange lights). It was the Vanity Fair opening party for the Tribeca Film Festival. Every year it is THE challenge to catch a flick of of Robert DeNiro as he makes one last grimace and races by the red carpet. David Bowie usually leaves the "posing " to Iman but this year, to our delight, he was incredibly animated and shared with us the fact that this was their 12th year anniversary. As he neared my camera, I asked if they were "still spiders from Mars." I truly don't know if he heard me, but this little dance move occurred out of the blue.

It was such a TRIP to see Narciso Rodriguez direct Jessica Seinfeld to pose for PAPER.

kerri washingtonWhile it is common knowledge that Whoopi Goldberg can be cranky, this evening she told ET (as she glanced at nearby guest Kerri Washington), "See, I lost her in weight -- I lost 43 pounds and that's just about what she weighs."

Some of the other guests were Minnie Driver, Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon, Harvey Wenstein, Amy Sacco, Amy Fine Collins, Christy Turlington and Ed Burns, Walter Cronkite and host Graydon Carter. Interesting note: these were all loyal attendees last year and the year before.

One of the most bizarre questions posed to Kerri Washington was what she thought about Alec Baldwin's tirade and inappropriate phone call to his daughter. Without skipping a beat, she replied she was not a parent so couldn't comment except to say anything that took our minds off the war in Iraq was a good thing.

Happy Birthday Nicole Miller!

By Kim Hastreiter

mary boone, kerry simon paige powell 042407.JPG.jpgandre balasz, tony shafrazi, nicole miller_042407.JPG.jpgross bleckner kim hastreiter

I went to a really fun dinner on Tuesday night in honor of the wonderful woman Nicole Miller's 25th year in the biz. I love Nicole and it was great to sit down with 200 "close friends" (I know it sounds absurd but it was kind of true that these people have all known/knew each other over the past 25 years in our crazy city) who felt the same way. It was at Chinatown (the old Time Cafe) and it turned out to be so fun, because I saw so many old friends there, including my dear friend Paige Powell who flew in from Portland for the evening.

My table was super cute. I sat next to my old friend Ross Bleckner, the painter, who I adore, and across from the old school chef Kerry Simon, who was a doll (he just opened a new restaurant in Times Square called Spotlight). Lots of other old schoolers were there at our table including the fun Tama Janowitz, who I hadn't seen in ages, the amazing jewelry designer Janis Savit (she is one of the greats), my new BFF Mary Boone (I kid you not -- I've never met her, but she was so nice to me I was suspicious), this cute young scruffy photog named Sam Bassett, and of course my fave person in the world Paige.

Lots more fun folks were there... Cindy Crawford, Allison Sarofim, Bobby Kennedy, Andre Balasz, Karen Duffy (my neighbor who I adore!), Tony Shafrazi, Sara Wynter, Jay McInerney, Zac Posen, the list goes on. The thing about this particular dinner was that it was not an "event." (I go to millions of "events" where people are there for no reason.) It just felt good and fun because everyone was there to have fun and celebrate this person that they all really love -- Nicole who is a super good friend to tons of people. Good vibes. Congrats to her!

Surf's Up on Benefit Season

By David Hershkovits

design for humanity

Tis the season for benefits. You'd be hard-pressed to find a not-for-profit that's not doing what it can to lure supporters to their star-studded events. Then there are others, like the surfwear company Billabong's charitable division Design for Humanity. This year, they're going all out to raise money for SurfAid International, a non-profit humanitarian aid organization that runs community-based health, education and disease prevention programs in village areas of the Mentawai Islands and Nias region of Western Sumatra where 25% of children die before reaching the age of twelve years from preventable and treatable diseases, including malaria, measles, tetanus, diarrhea and respiratory infections.

Tomorrow, April 26th, Billabong USA hosts an event in Los Angeles at the Avalon/Spyder Club in Hollywood. The beautiful thing here is that everyone can participate, as the entire event will be featured in a live webcast to be hosted at designforhumanity. The webcast will be approximately one and a half hours in length and will feature both the fashion, art and music components that can be purchased on Ebay as quickly as they appear.

Opening Night: A Moon for the Misbegotten

By Whitney Spaner

a moon for the misbegottenMonday night was the opening of the Broadway revival of A Moon for the Misbegotten, starring Kevin Spacey, Eve Best and Colm Meaney at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. The play by Eugene O'Neill is about the unrequited love between a farmer (Meaney)'s alcoholic landlord (Spacey) and his ogrish daughter with a ruined reputation (Best).

The opening night party was at 230 Fifth, with the plan to use the rooftop bar. But because of the unseasonable weather they had to move inside. But a few of the stars still came out to help celebrate the cast’s almost three-hour performance including the gorgeous Aaron Eckhart, who was in town promoting his new movie No Reservations with Catherine Zeta Jones and Abigail Breslin. Eckhart hinted that he had been supposed to make his own appearance on Broadway this year but due to a scheduling conflict with a film he’d had to put it off.

Patrick Swayze looked amazing with a thin beard, shyly posing for photographers saying he’d been out on his ranch too long, (maybe doing some on-site research for his turn in the new musical Prairie) and wasn’t used to the attention. The slight Sam Rockwell talked about his role as Charley Ford in the Brad Pitt vehicle The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Haley Joel Osmont, who starred with Spacey in Pay It Forward and is currently attending NYU, said the great performances in the play made him eager to make a stage appearance.

Although Ben Brantley from the New York Times called Spacey’s performance too speedy, he praised Colm Meaney and the British import Eve Best for their interpretations.

I’m resisting the urge to put up a picture of Aaron Eckhart in favor of this cast photo, which I think is only fair seeing as how they were the reason for the party and my conversation with Aaron in the first place. (l-r) Kevin Spacey, Eugene O'Hare, Eve Best, Billy Carter and Colm Meaney.

By Mickey Boardman

anissa nouhi and michael carlbenetton

Mr. Mickey has been hitting the town a LOT lately and he wants to bring you MMBloggers some of the highlights. MM was on the roof of the Gansevoort Hotel last week for a fabulously chic tea hosted by Benetton and Sisley. Benetton just celebrated their 40th anniversary last October with a devastatingly chic soiree and fashion show in Paris last October (of course Mr. Mickey was front and center!). This tea showcased the fall looks from Benetton, Sisley and some of the special 40th anniversary Benetton pieces. In the photos you can see a cute men's Benetton look as well as a super sexy shot of Benetton babe Anissa Nouhi is a sexbomb look alongside Allure's Michael Carl, a judge on the new Bravo show Shear Genius which debuts this week!!! Be sure to put on your best Benetton look and tune in!!!

Nacotheque!

By Shanon Kelley

nacotheque

What's that, you ask? "Nacotheque is a made up name combining the words naco and discotheque. Naco in Mexico is a way to describe the Latin American hard-drinking, jalopy-tinkering working class – whom Americans would consider cheesy white trash." But in New York it's quite possibly the coolest Saturday nght party I've been to in a really long time. And you guessed it, it's an all Spanish dance-athon! I would even go so far as to dub it, "The Spanish MisShapes," but the DJs are more animated, the attendees are more fun, and the whole thing takes itself nowhere near as seriously as that other Saturday night staple. Plus it's at the little known bar/club, Fontana's, in the LES/Chinatown region. Aside from the cute boys and girls in the basement for Nacotheque, this place draws more of a bridge and tunnel type crowd.

Anyhoo, it's a party "where Latino and Anglo hipsters alike pogo-bop to Spanish-language, nouveau-eighties electropop, vintage rock, and cumbia. The Nacotheque hosts and resident DJs, Marcelo Cunning and Amylulita (pictured here), bring back old school Latino hits from the 60's, 70's, and 80's as well as introduce you to new Latin-alternative music coming from Mexico, Spain, Puerto Rico, Columbia, and even the United States." In other words, it's the bees-knees.

Learn more at their website (where you can even download a Nacotheque mix) and on their myspace page. See you there on Saturday!

Mr. Mickey on the Fashion Party Train!!!

By Mickey Boardman

iman and rachel royluigi tadinichloe sevigny and proenza schouler

Whew! Mr Mickey is still recovering from Wednesday night's mad spree of shindigs. MM started out at a little shindig for the designers Libertine who have a fun project coming out this summer (more on that when the time comes!). Then it was off to Saks for a party for the gorgeous and chic Rachel Roy. Check out the shot of her with fellow stunner Iman. Honestly, MM j'adores Rachel's look toujours! MM was in such a fashion state that he snuck up to the semi-recently renovated and fabulous men's floor at Saks and bought a new spring jacket by Mr. Michael Kors!! And it was beige without a sequin on it!
Saks was where all glamour girls and boys were: Peter Davis, Jackie Astier, Damon Dash, Saks' mustachioed Michael Fink.

Then it was onto the sumptuous Versace mansion/Boutique for a Save Venice party cohosted by Vogue. Tinsley Mortimer, Byrdie Bell, Ivanka Trump, Hana Soukupova and a cavalcade of cuties packed the place. The star standout was Luigi Tadini, who is without a doubt, the most delicious dreamboat in New York or Sao Paolo!!!

Finally we shook our tired fashion tuchases up to Bergdorf's for a Proenza Schouler soiree hosted by PAPER's favorite cover star Chloe Sevigny. The store looks great and Roopal Patel and Linda Fargo are always chic and sexy! Kai Kuhne was creating some drama with Christian Laliberte, socialiterank.com's least favorite boy about town. It was an uptown downtown mix of Ben Cho, Eugenia Silva, Fabiola Beracasa, Lauren Davis and Helen Schifter. Fashion is a lot of work sportsfans!!!

Mr. Mickey Wants to Make Friends With: Maggie Betts and Lyle Maltz

By Mickey Boardman

maggie betts lyle maltzWelcome to Mr. Mickey's new feature: "MM Wants to Make Friends With," where we'll introduce you to cuties on the scene that seem super fun to such a degree that MM is dying to get their information into his Sidekick -- despite the fact that one of the hippest young ladies in NYC (who is in the Beautiful People issue's social group!) told Mr. Mickey that 'no one in NYC has a Sidekick' making MM feel like a sexy L.A. teenaged girl!!

Anyhoo say hi to Maggie Betts and Lyle Maltz who seem to be having a ball in this shot from Style.com. MM has seen these kids out and about at all the parties but has yet to bond and become BFFs (best friends forever). So if you see Maggie and Lyle out and about, tell them Mr. Mickey sends his overly-accessorized love!!

By Mickey Boardman

A few nights ago all the cuties of downtown headed uptown to Bergdorf Goodman (and then the Indian Consulate) to celebrate the House of Waris, the super fabulous jewelry line but everyone's favorite multi-tasking sikh, Waris.

Here are some shots (from patrickmcmullan.com) of MM's cutest couples of the night. Of course we have Waris and longtime lady love Chiara Clemente. MM also drooled over writer Fran Liebowitz and Chiara's mother Alba Clemente. And finally a trio: MM (looking very bloated!) with another Clemente, Nina, and her boyfriend Anthony Flores.

Also seen on the scene: Willem Dafoe, Rachel Roy and Damon Dash, Arden Wohl, Melissa Bent, Melia Marden, Kate Schelter, Francesco Clemente, Fabiola Beracasa, Sarah Cristobal, Anne Christensen with baby Gloria in tow, Anne Slowey, Ben Cho, Jessica Joffe, Josh Lucas, Simon Hammerstein and more!

Farley Granger Book Party

By Dennis Dermody

Strangers_on_a_train.jpg

I went to the book party for Farley Granger's autobigraphy Include Me Out last night at Jezebel's restaurant on 45th and Ninth Ave. I went with Julianne Moore who the night before finished her Broadway run with the David Hare play The Vertical Hour and is next doing the new film by Fernando Meirelles (who did The Constant Gardener and City Of God) called Blindness co-starring with hottie Daniel Craig. It's always a bit of a thrill to shake hands with Farley Granger -- my head floods with memories of him brooding and handsome in Alfred Hitchcock's Rope or on the run from the law with lovely Cathy O'Donnell in They Live By Night or the dashing soldier in Luchino Visonti's exquisite Senso.

My friend suggested I "steal his lighter," a reference to Hitchcock's Strangers On A Train. Farley was there with his partner and co-writer Robert Calhoun, one of the sweetest man I've ever met -- back in the day he used to produce As The World Turns which Juilanne Moore and Farley both appeared on (not to mention Parkey Posey, Steven Weber, Jason Biggs, etc.- many of them cast by Vince Liebhart, who was also in attendance last night). Check out the book (from St. Martin's Press, and also The Film Forum (on April 23rd) which hosts a special night with Farley Granger, a true legend.
