This Week in Art Openings: Teresa Margolles, "Defining a Moment" and "Arctic Hysteria"
By Mary Logan Barmeyer
There are more photos in this gallery. View them all.
Teresa Margolles, "OPERATIVO"
So here's a creepy exhibition: Teresas Margolles, who studied forensic medicine in her homeland of Mexico with collective SEMEFO (Forensic Medical Service), applies what she learned to her art -- and not just figuratively. She actually collected objects from the morgue in Mexico City to manipulate and reuse for this exhibition, which focuses on relations between Mexico and the U.S.
Y Gallery, 32–70 85th St., (718) 565-6285. May 29-July 30.
"Defining a Moment: 25 New York Artists"
Here's your chance to scope out the hot young things of the art world before they land at the MoMA. These 25 artists, each backed by a leading New York gallery, were invited to put their work up in SoHo's House of Campari for its third annual young artist series. Each have already had their first solo exhibit in New York this season or will this upcoming season. Get a leg up!
House of Campari, 54 Crosby St., (718) 483-0815. May 30–June 15.
"Arctic Hysteria: New Art from Finland”
This summer, when you start feeling loopy from the unbearable summer heat, head to P.S. 1 to cool off at this Finnish exhibition, "Arctic Hysteria." Sixteen of Finland's best contemporary artists -- intergenerational and interdisciplinary -- bring together pieces of aliens, utopias and psychedelia (we said it would mollify the heat -- not the loopiness) from our favorite Nordic land. Ice breakers and snowstorms take center stage, and we think no Finnish exhibition would be complete without a video taken from a reindeer's perspective (this one will not disappoint). Artist-musicians the Pink Twins and Kemialliset Ystavat (Finnish for "Chemical Friends") play at the opening.
P.S. 1, 22–25 Jackson Ave., Long Island City, (718) 784-2084. Opening festivities June 1, 12–6 p.m. Through Sept. 15.

Eight Items or Less: Tom Postma Designs 70-Foot Skate Ramp, The Weather Channel Releases a CD and Ibiza's Space Comes to Vegas
By Gary Pini
2. New York's PS1 is hosting “The History of the Turntable” in the Botanic Gardens across the street from the Miami Beach Convention Center. Visitors can listen to this 90 minute oral history -- including commentary from everyone from DJ Spooky to Grandmaster Flash -- while relaxing in the gardens.
3. Meanwhile, if you are stuck in New York, head over to the corner of West Broadway and Grand in SoHo and check out the American Apparel billboard on the wall. It seems to be a parody of the company's normal ads, but who knows.
4. Because everyone else already has one, the Weather Channel is releasing a CD. Their's is called the Best of Smooth Jazz and it features the music heard in the background during the “Local On the 8s” broadcast. Try to stay awake while listening.
5. Popular Ibiza club Space is opening a branch in Las Vegas' Rio Hotel according to DBTH.com, though they doubt that the Spanish club means anything in the USA.
6. Reuters reports that a recent study of Swiss students found that those who used marijuana were more socially driven and more likely to participate in sports than abstainers. And even though they were more likely to skip class, they have the same level of good grades.
