NY Korean Film Fest Starts Tomorrow
By Carol Lee

Here I'm treading on Cinemaniac's territory (sorry, Dennis!) but I'm going there anyway. The New York Korean Film Festival 2007, which celebrates its seventh year, kicks off tomorrow (August 21) and it will run through September 2. And you know what, I'm going! This year's fest features a hodgepodge of K-flicks from sappy love stories to crazy horrors and a retrospective of Kwon-Taek Im who directed Chunhyang. The screenings will be at Cinema Village, IFC Center and BAM.
If you're a Korean movie novice, King and the Clown is a good place to start. This period dramedy is called Korea's Brokeback Mountain and was a monster blockbuster when it first came out. (Side note: I rented this one for Mr. Mickey from K-town. He hasn't watched it yet but you can borrow it when he's done.) The one I really want to see is Whispering Corridors, which according to Dennis Dermody, is totally retarded and scary. Others worth checking out are Between, Red Shoes, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and A Tale of Two Sisters. See you at the movies!!

Son of Rambow at BAM
By PAPERMAG Editors
Here's a report from our special correspondent Gary Pini...
The Sundance Film Festival is showcasing another "best of" edition of their Utah event. This New York version includes selected films, theater and music and runs thru June 10th at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Last night's kick-off and party was hosted by Robert Redford and featured Son of Rambow directed by Garth Jennings and produced by Nick Goldsmith aka Hammer & Tongs. The two Brits started in the biz making music videos (Blur, Supergrass etc.) and hit it big in 2005 with their Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Rambow is their take on "let's make a movie" as executed by two boys with vivid imaginations and features brilliant use of animation and a great 80's soundtrack. It was picked up by Paramount Pictures for general release in July. (Full disclosure: Your's truly hired the budding filmmakers in 1995 to produce the attached music video for a song called "Mr. Kirk" by 4 Hero.)

Teeth Gets an R!
By Dennis Dermody

Good news for the movie Teeth, the wonderful dark comedy by Mitchell Lichtenstein about a teenage girl named Dawn (Jess Weixler) with teeth in her vagina. It just got an R rating, which is a big relief for a movie like this. An NC17 can really cripple box office, and this film needs to find its audience. Saw a rough cut of the movie many months ago and it was just terrific -- almost a feminist horror comedy, but fun from start to finish. Think it will reach theaters in the Fall.

NY Doll Give-Away Bonanza: Part Two!
By Shanon Kelley

Once again my fabulous connections have offered up delectable treats for all the NY Doll fans (I know there are at least 10 of you!). This time it's not quite music related, but if you're anything like me than you're all giant fans of Aqua Teen Hunger Force. And what's more, I bet you're all just salivating with anticipation for the new ATHF movie. Am I right? I know I'm right!
So here's the contest deal. In the comments below, you (the dedicated NY Doll and ATHF fan) answer the following question: If you could add any musician(s) to the ATHF team, who would it be and what would their character be? For example, my entry would be The Black Lips and they would all be beer cans. Get it?
The winner will be chosen on Friday the 13th and wil receive a Meatwad-tastic gift bag that includes a meatwad beach ball, meatwad socks, a mug koozie, an ATHF shirt, post cards, a movie poster and a CD sampler. How could you not want to enter? Remember kiddies, there is no wrong answer!

Lily Tomlin & David O. Russell Meltdown Part 2
By David Hershkovits
The set of I Heart Huckabees was no love fest as has been previously reported. To her credit, when asked about these tapes that have now surfaced, Tomlin took the high road, laughing it off to typical stress on the set (miami new times). Here Dustin Hoffman throws in his two cents while Isabelle Huppert checks her hair and makeup.

No Money Shot for Shooter
By Dennis Dermody

Shooter is the new Paramount action thriller from Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) starring Mark Wahlberg as a former Marine scout sniper who gets framed for an assassination attempt on the President by a sordid network of government bad guys. When it operates on The Fugitive level it kind of works, but bogs down towards the end when it stops to expose the onion-like levels of rot operating covertly within the White House. The Fox TV show 24 has upped the ante for this kind of claptrap and is hard to top. This is decent, Wahlberg is shirtless (alas, with a gory bullet wound) but still, that’s entertainment.
Shooter opens on Friday.

Will Ferrell Straddles Times Square
By Carol Lee

I was in Times Square a couple of nights ago and almost fell over laughing when I spotted Frank the Tank aka Will Ferrell high up above ESPN Zone doing a full split. This swimming-pool-size billboard for Ferrell's new movie Blades of Glory was the best thing I saw in T-Square since the neon lobster in front of Red Lobster. Looks like this one's going to be Talladega Nights on ice and funny as hell! It's about a male figure skating pair made up of Ferrell and Jon Heder from Napoleon Dynamite. You do the math! The movie comes out on March 30. If you can't wait till then, here's the trailer.
p.s. I love Will's new 'fro do!
