Eight Items or Less: Sean MacPhearson Acquires the Magic Castle, Union Hall Could Be in Trouble and May is Bike Month

1. Sean MacPherson has supposedly acquired the landmark Magic Castle in Los Angeles as well as the nearby restaurant Yamashiro. Instead of partnering with Eric Goode (Maritime, Bowery Hotel, etc.) it is rumored that the Magic Castle somehow involves Serge Becker (The Box, Bowery Bar etc.). (via HotelChatter.com)
2. According to the RIAA's latest music industry sales report, the sale of vinyl records increased 37 percent in 2007. Maybe that's why there are $85 LPs and vintage stereo equipment for sale at the John Varvatos/CBs store.
3. Is Park Slope's popular music venue and bar Union Hall in trouble? Their liquor license is up for renewal at the end of May and there's a public hearing on May 8th.
4. Save the date: On August 15 there will be a free concert in Lincoln Center's Damrosh Park featuring the US premiere of E2-E4 by Manuel Gottsching (Pitchfork's 79th greatest album of the 80's) with the Joshua Light Show (the house light show at the Filmore East).
5. May is Bike Month in NYC.
6. Photo portraits of musicians including Mick Jagger, Moby and Amy Winhouse shot by Bryan Adams go on exhibit this week in New York as part of the www.Hear-the-World.com initiative.

Moby Is Mystery Guest as NYC Embraces J. Keith van Straaten's What's My Line?

This past Monday night, Moby left the taping of Conan O'Brien just in time to make a surprise appearance as the Mystery Guest on "What's My Line? - Live On Stage" (now appearing at the 199-seat Barrow Street Theatre). As Fiona Apple looked on from the audience, her boyfriend (author Jonathan Ames) led the panel in guessing Moby's identity. J. Keith van Straaten, host of the stage adaptation of the classic TV show, could barely get Moby to say a word about his new CD, Last Night, which dropped the next day. The shiny-headed musician preferred telling cautionary tales of mixing business with ex-girlfriends!

Moby Makes Like Mark Ronson?

Is Moby the new Mark Ronson with a twist? Moby's new record Last Night features the Mobester as producer. He doesn't sing himself, but lets the vocalist take the spotlight. What's the twist? Well, with Moby, politics is always in the picture as well. Like in this video "Disco Lies," where Moby grafts an old-fashioned disco Diva tune to a vegan message.

Today's Music-Related Tidbits: Moby Spins, Feist Sells

Back in the day, one could find Moby DJ-ing in downtown clubs like the Big Haus and he always played a little reggae, a little punk and a little whatever. On October 11, the man will be back behind the turntables DJ-ing and hosting a new club night called "Degenerates" at the Hiro Ballroom. Also spinning: Stretch Armstrong. Meanwhile, around the corner on 17th Street, the other half of the building with porthole windows that isn't already a hotel (Maritime) is going to become one. Hampshire Hotels just bought 346 West 17th for $70 million. Unrelated but cool: Thanks to iPod and no thanks to radio, Feist's album The Reminder sold 28,000 copies last week and moves from #36 to #28 in the Billboard charts.
