Spring Break Beat Down at Mansion
By Gary Pini

According to Miami Beach police, three University of Delaware students on Spring Beak were viciously beaten in a back room of Miami nightclub Mansion on Friday. The club is the sister to New York's Mansion on Manhattan's West Side owned by the Opium Group and Mark Baker. Eight club employees were taken into custody after the incident -- allegedly caught on security cameras -- when the trio asked for a printed copy of their $700 bottle tab.

Arty Tats!
By Kim Hastreiter

The other fun thing I saw at Art Basel was a collab that one of my favorite artists Tobias Wong did with writer Aric Chen and Josee Lepage in the Design District. These guys opened a tatoo parlor and convinced some artists to design tatoos that would be given on site for the four days of Art Basel. They enlisted artists like Lawrence Weiner and Kaws (see their tat designs above) as well as Vito Acconci, Hella Jongorius and a few others. Great idea!

Studio Job
By Kim Hastreiter
One of my favorite things at the fair in the design district in Miami this past week was the exhibit of Studio Job at Moss. I especially died for this amazing 800-pound steel safe. Turn the clowns nose and it locks. Amazing, no?

I Lived Through Miami.
By Kim Hastreiter

I know, I know, I've been a terribly delinquent blogger! But I just could not bring myself to start writing about Art Basel Miami this time around. It was all so insane. Overloaded circuits on art, parties, branding, hustling, selling, buying, schmoozing. We pitched a tent at The Raleigh and I commissioned the artists of Creative Growth Art Center (a program for mentally and physically handicapped adults in Oakland California) to reinterpret hot artworks by trendy artists. The work was fantastic. (You can see the appropriated John Currin paintings above and Kara Walker paintings below.)

Miami, Here We Come!
By Kim Hastreiter
I'm off to Miami this morning to pull together the PAPER tent at the Raleigh Hotel where we will be holding court this week starting Wednesday for Art Basel. So if any of you are down there STOP BY and say hi and see what we've done. I definitely feel like the balloon is bursting down there, and that's why I'm so glad we are having an amazing show by the artists at Creative Growth Art Center to add a little levity to the situation.
I've invited the artists to recreate trendy artists' work and the results are amazing.
We open our tent Wednesday night at the Raleigh and are open the rest of the week as well. Here is the schedule.

Eight Items or Less: Iggy and the Stooges at Art Basel, Lou Reed in Berlin and Use Your Gift Certificates for Pete's Sake!
By Gary Pini

1. We started packing for Miami over the weekend after we heard that Iggy and the Stooges will be appearing for free on the beach during Art Basel. The group will perform on Wednesday night, December 5, from 10 to 11 p.m. during "Art Loves Music." Past performers in the series include Peaches and The Scissors Sisters.
2. We also heard that Lou Reed will make an appearance at the screening and afterparty for Julian Schnabel's film Berlin. The film is a 2006 concert performance of Reed's 1973 album of the same title. It premiered at this year's Venice Film Festival.
3. And a last bit of Basel news for today: The design for the new Miami Art Museum by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron will be unveiled next week.
4. Sad news in the rock world over the weekend as Quiet Riot singer Kevin DuBrow and Hawthorne Heights guitarist Case Calvert both passed away.
5. If you receive a gift card or certificate over the holidays, don't forget to use it. Retail stores are making a fortune from the cards as 27 percent are not even used leading to annual loss to consumers of over $8 billion. Use it or lose it!
6. With all the anti-immigrant ranting going around, we were happy to read in today's Post that the Fiscal Policy Institute released a study showing that both legal and illegal immigrants account for 22 percent of New York's gross domestic product. More than one in three NYC resident's were born in another country. The report's author says, "We ought to be careful that we don't poison the atmosphere for the broad immigration that is incredibly important to the New York economy."

Eight Items or Less: Paul McCartney Canoodles, Britney Spears Gets an Asterisk, Felix Da Housecat Hates on Justice
By Gary Pini

1. While Paul McCartney was spending a "romantic weekend in the Hamptons with his rich MTA-board gal pal" (NY Post) his former drummer was hard at work in L.A. Ringo Starr spent yesterday standing on the roof of the Capitol Records building in Hollywood promoting the DVD release of the Beatles' 1965 film Help!
2. Britney Spears’ new LP Blackout is going into the Billboard Top 200 at number two with an asterisk. She would have been number one, but the trade magazine this week changed their chart eligibility rules to allow "proprietary" albums (those only available in one store or chain) to appear on the chart. Number one? The Eagles’ first studio album in 28 years Long Road Out of Eden, which was available only at Wal-Mart.
3. Felix Da Housecat disses Justice: "Justice is nothing but Daft Punk without the robot. It's like Daft Punk had a baby and kicked the baby out." (via rythmism.com)
4. Flashback to the summer of 2006. Nicky Hilton was launching her "sexy, glamorous" Nicky O hotel chain at the Breakwater Hotel in South Beach and she was doing the designing. Over the weekend we noticed this ad in The Wall Street Journal: "For Sale By Auction on November 19th 2007, The Breakwater Edison Hotel, Free and clear of brand and management, Redevelopment partially completed."
5. Four people were killed and several wounded by gunfire at a rave in Venezuela over the weekend. British DJ Carl Cox was just a few minutes into his set when the violence began. The incident was captured on video and (briefly) posted on YouTube but has since been removed.

Eight Items or Less (Nightlife Edition!): Miami's Where the Party's At, Nightlife and Vinyl Are Where the Money's At and Sebastian Is Where Margaret Cho's At
By Gary Pini

1. "Art and culture form a several billion dollar industry in New York City and if you tack on nightlife -- a $9 billion industry -- the impact of the culture economy rivals and even outperforms that of most other sectors," according to Elizabeth Currid author of The Warhol Economy.
2. Maxim Magazine says that New York is only the fourth best party city in the USA. Miami, Los Angeles and Atlanta ranked higher.
3. Record industry trade magazine Hits predicts that no album will sell more than 100,000 copies when Billboard announces the Top 100 tomorrow. DJs, however, are celebrating the news that sales of vinyl doubled in the UK last year.
4. Kenny Kenny tells us that Margaret Cho will be at his new night Sebastian at 27 W. 24th St. on Thursday night.
5. Nightlife legend Ian Schrager is suing somebody (stupid) for registering the web address www.schragerboutiquehotels.com.
6. The annual Winter Music Conference will take place from March 25 to 29, 2008, in the #1 party city (see # 2 above).

Eight Items or Less: Perez Hilton Leaks Britney, DJs Vote for Themselves and Paul McCarthy Installs Chocolate Factory
By Gary Pini

1. Because we believe everything we hear (and there are no repercussions to spreading it around the Internet): Radiohead has already sold 1.2 million copies of their new album and they have pocketed $10 million.
2. Perez Hilton has been sued by Zomba (the publishing arm of Jive Records) for posting 10 tracks from Britney Spears' forthcoming album. The album will now be coming forth sooner (October 30) than originally intended (November 13).
3. You're right, there could be repercussions to spreading things around on the Internet. Item #1 should have included the word "supposedly."
4. Here's a new twist on "The Million Dollar Home Page" inspired by the bursting real estate bubble. Somebody is selling their Miami condo for $35.50 per square inch. You can get your piece at www.condofiasco.com but be forewarned: You may need a lawyer just to read the fine print. We got lost half way through the "in plain English" explanation.
5. Speaking of Miami, that city's version of the "Fillmore" brand-extension juggernaut opened this week in the former Jackie Gleason Theater with an appearance by Ricky Martin. Kid Rock follows next Thursday.
6. A big scandal is rocking the DJ world. DJ Mag has discovered that several top DJs were voting for themselves more than once in the mag's annual reader poll. Shame on you DJ Dan!
7. Crack is wack. Two people were injured when they fell into a giant crack-in-the-floor sculpture at the Tate Modern in London. Created by artist Doris Salcedo, the work symbolizes "the gap between white Europeans and the rest of humanity."
8. Just in time for the holidays, artist Paul McCarthy is installing a chocolate factory at the Maccarone Gallery ( 630 Greenwich Street), from November 11 to December 14. The factory will manufacture edible chocolate Santas holding a butt plug.

Eight Items or Less: Twilo Folds in Miami, Cocaine Gets Cheaper and One Person Didn't Like Knocked Up
By PAPERMAG Editors

1. When the world famous New York club Twilo folded in 2001 the owners tried to re-establish the venue in Miami last year. Now the Miami branch has also folded. Located in the downtown Miami 24-hour nightlife district, the club encountered many of the same problems currently being felt on West 27th Street in New York’s nightlife district. The cities' original concept of keeping all the clubs in one zoned area has backfired by also bringing all the attendant problems to one neighborhood -- and then blaming the clubs. In a recent posting on burlingtonnights.com, regular Twilo DJ Danny Tenaglia observes that "Miami is being completely taken over by hip-hop, reggaeton, VIP rooms and non-intelligent teenage drop-outs with gansta tattoos."
2. The next time your favorite house-music anthem exhorts you to "Jack your body, ja- ja- jack your body!" your feet might be doing more than just making you sweat. British newspaper The Independent reports that Enviu, a nonprofit organization for eco-projects, and a Dutch architectural firm called Doll have teamed to create a Sustainable Dance Club. Though still in the planning stages, the dancers will eventually "squeeze a surface membrane in the dancefloor which works a flywheel to generate voltage, which is then fed back into the system to light it." If you can't see your date, just dance harder and brighten up the room. (via The Wall Street Journal).
3. Must be the Shoes (part III): The Consumer Product Safety Commission reported this week that Heelys (shoes with wheels in the heels) caused 1,600 emergency room visits, 64 injuries and one death from September 2005 through December 2006. Wear your helmet, Mr. Mickey!
4. According to the Atlantic, the price of cocaine is falling dramatically. Perhaps diverted by the hunt for terrorists, the DEA claims that the price of a gram in New York City was $20 to $25 in 2005.
5. When you're to trying come down, consider a Mediflow pillow. Its inventor claims that the "patented water-based design therapeutically relieves chronic neck pain" and that you will wake up feeling "rejuvenated, soothed and energized."
6. Or, better yet, skip the powder and the pillow and go to www.i-doser.com where you can download 30 minutes of aural stimulation for $3.75. Their version of "cocaine" supposedly induces a "simulated state achieved through the use of advanced binaural methods." And, like rap music, it comes with a warning: "This one comes close." Sgt. Pepper comes close enough for us.
7. Apparently, someone doesn’t like Knocked Up.

Knockin' On Chan Marshall's Door
By Carol Lee
We made our love for Cat Power official by putting her on PAPER's May cover. When I flew down to Miami to interview Chan Marshall, I had very mixed feelings. The whole situation seemed touch and go all the way, but soon enough, I realized I had nothing to worry about. Chan was super-gracious, open, generous and all-around lovely -- I'm not just saying this, I swear. She bought me a souvenir crab leg keychain from Joe's Stone Crab ("you have to have this," she said) and put me up at her house when I had to stay an extra day in Miami because, well, it's a long story. It involves a canon ball and my tape recorder going bust -- the interview was by her pool (how Miami!).
When we talked, she was sweet and candid. She told me how she was nervous about taking on a cameo role in Wong Kar-wai's new movie My Blueberry Nights as Jude Law's ex-girlfriend from Russia, how she practiced her lines with a Russian accent only to be told on the day of the shoot to lose it by the assistant director, and about Wong's method directing style. "When we were shooting my scene, and you know, he always wears sunglasses even at night, he told me to act sad, then for the next scene he'd say to me, 'Chan (Chinese style pronunciation),' that's what he always called me, 'Now try shedding just one tear.'" Three takes later, she was balling. "Then he said, 'Now one more, but this time no tears.'" And that was the take he wanted.
