Eight Items or Less: U2's Basquiat, Bast's "Nose Candy" and This Weekend's SummerStage

1. Irish band U2 is selling a painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat at Sotheby's in London on July 1. The painting was purchased at a New York gallery in 1989 and displayed in the band's Dublin studio. Estimated price: $8 to $12 million.
2. The White House issued a report today that claims marijuana potency increased last year to the highest level in 30 years.
3. Artist Bast has a great show called "Nose Candy" up until July 12 at new Broooklynite Gallery (334 Malcolm X Blvd.).
4. Don't be nervous tomorrow. Statisticians in the Netherlands have discovered that Friday the 13th is actually safer than an average Friday. (via Reuters)
5. The 2008 Rainbow Gathering will take place in Wyoming.

Eight Items or Less: Tom Postma Designs 70-Foot Skate Ramp, The Weather Channel Releases a CD and Ibiza's Space Comes to Vegas

2. New York's PS1 is hosting “The History of the Turntable” in the Botanic Gardens across the street from the Miami Beach Convention Center. Visitors can listen to this 90 minute oral history -- including commentary from everyone from DJ Spooky to Grandmaster Flash -- while relaxing in the gardens.
3. Meanwhile, if you are stuck in New York, head over to the corner of West Broadway and Grand in SoHo and check out the American Apparel billboard on the wall. It seems to be a parody of the company's normal ads, but who knows.
4. Because everyone else already has one, the Weather Channel is releasing a CD. Their's is called the Best of Smooth Jazz and it features the music heard in the background during the “Local On the 8s” broadcast. Try to stay awake while listening.
5. Popular Ibiza club Space is opening a branch in Las Vegas' Rio Hotel according to DBTH.com, though they doubt that the Spanish club means anything in the USA.
6. Reuters reports that a recent study of Swiss students found that those who used marijuana were more socially driven and more likely to participate in sports than abstainers. And even though they were more likely to skip class, they have the same level of good grades.
