Fashion Week Countdown

By Kim Hastreiter

creative growth

I always hate this last week of August. I always feel big anxiety before the shit hits the fan in September. And next week is going to be a doozie with the steam engine racing up to full speed Tuesday morning. On the other hand, I can't wait til Sept. 4th, because that's the day the big PAPER Barneys window will go up on the corner of Madison Ave. at 61st St. The window will be filled with artwork from our September issue -- specifically the fashion illustrations created by the developmentally disabled artists from a California-based art program called Creative Growth. If you haven't picked up our September issue, you must, because I swear this piece is really, really special. (A collectors item!)

The mentally disabled artists created the most amazing fashion illustrations from the fall collections (from the catwalks). I'm already getting phone calls from the designers themselves who want to purchase the drawings. Trust me on this one folks. It's special.

(check out the drawing they did of the fabulous Dolce & Gabanna gown above!)

We Love Heartschallenger

By Kim Hastreiter

heartsrevolutionOur Cali friend Leyla is launching a fabulous new heart shaped vinyl Heartschallenger CD (see photo above). Leyla, for those who remember, is our great artist friend who drives that cute ice cream truck around Los Angeles and now New York City. Her music is awesome (she makes it with her boyfriend Ben) and her new vinyl is amazing, not to mention amazing-looking. It comes in Day-Glo and with lots of fun stickers. You can get it at Colette (I introduced Sarah from Colette to Leyla when she was last in town and they got along famously!)

Shears Hustle and Blow Opening Party

By Kim Hastreiter

ric pipino and mark hunter

shearschandelier.jpgWe hosted a really fun little party last night on Crosby Street in honor of my old friend hairstylist Ric Pipino's (pictured above with Mark Hunter) new hot venture. He has partnered with the fun cosmetics chain store Ricky's and is opening cute, inexpensive, super-groovy hair salons in the back of these shops (starting in NYC) called Shears Hustle and Blow. The art collective Faile did the logo and the shops are very fun-looking (check out the chandeliers here made of gold-dipped hairdryers).

The party was fun, especially when our Los Angeles girlfriend Leyla pulled up in her Hearts Challenger Ice Cream Truck with The Cobra Snake aka Mark Hunter in tow. New York is going NUTS for Leyla's ice cream truck (see Leyla in her truck below) and she is literally being STALKED on the streets. You can find her out front of the weekly Misshapes party starting this week plus all kinds of companies are chasing her ass to pull up at their parties. We asked Leyla to start a blog here at PAPER for the summer documenting the crazy adventures of a cute stylish ice cream truck driver in NYC for the summet... so that's gonna start soon. keep your eye out! Thanks to Caroline Torem Craig for the pix!!!

More Fun at the Colette Luncheon and Pink Martini Concert!

By Kim Hastreiter

leyla ice cream and sarahWOW I'm exhausted today. Wednesday was a wild one. First we hosted a luncheon at Indochine celebrating the tenth birthday of our fave shop in Paris, Colette. Sarah Lerfel and her mom (and shop namesake) Colette hopped over to New York for the occasion and it was SUCH a fun crowd. It was a great mix of artists, DJs, designers (young cool ones mostly), socialites and hipsters who all respect Sarah's eye and vision and wanted to come celebrate her. We had a great table of friends of Sarah -- many of whom I also knew.

Brian Kaws (the artist, see his photo below) was across sitting next to Supreme's James Jebbia who just became a dad! To my left was Weiden and Kennedy guru John Jay, and to my right was fabulous designer Thomas Brown, who I introduced to my Portland friend Thomas Lauderdale, who was playing at Carnegie Hall that night with his group Pink Martini (that's a whole other story to come!). I think Brown should dress all the Pink Martini guys actually.
