What's a Gawker?
By Ann Magnuson

Wow, am I ever glad I got the hell out of New York City! Now it's time to get the hell out of L.A. At least until next week. Off to the desert again! Hopefully I'll see some of the ophan llamas, emus and burros who hang out near Landers at this ranch right off Old Woman Springs Road. The photo above was taken at that particular private animal refuge which is run by a woman we only know as Tammy. Last year she had a pen full of baby goats. Cutest damn things you ever saw! And an excellent antidote to our current Culture-of-Bile.

Dean Johnson (Hopefully Not Resting in Peace)
By Ann Magnuson
The New York Times had a piece yesterday on New York Downtown superstar Dean Johnson and it irks the hell out of me that someone as truly original and creative and life-loving as Dean has to die a sensational death to get this much ink. (Although I bet he is giggling in some far-flung galaxy over all the fuss!) Dean Johnson was one of the last remanining Downtown originals and he was integral to what makes or, rather used to make, New York City the kick-ass city that it WAS. The mysteries swirling around Dean's untimely demise remain. Just who the hell is this Saleh character and why did some other guy die in his apartment prior to Dean? What in the blessed name of Neely O'Hara was in that "sleeping pill" anyway? To quote one commenter on the Gawker post I found the Times link on (dontcha know we read Gawker BEFORE the New York Times now to find out what REALLY is going on back east):

If Diana Had Lived Would She Have Tina Brown's New Face?
By Ann Magnuson
I did a double take when I first saw this publicity shot of Tina Brown (in last Friday's New York Times review of The Diana Chronicles). Wow, did she have 'work' done? Or is that just the weirdness that Photoshop bestows on most women of a certain age? There is something vaguely Mongolian going on there. Or maybe it's more northwestern Siberia? I meant to comment on this earlier in the week but couldn't find this particular photo online. Thanks to Gawker, it's now part of the viral community! I can't help but wonder if Princess Diana might look like this had she lived? Me, I'm holding out for the more advanced technology. Something that might make one look a little less like this. Then again, that is The New Look. And we could all use some 'freshening up'!
