R.I.P. Cyd Charisse

Even in the remote mountains of West Virginia we eventually hear the news and this news is sad indeed. Cyd Charisse, one of the most golden of the golden gals from Hollywood's Golden Age, passed away yesterday morning. This amazing dancer and star of yesteryear will thankfully live forever in movies like Singin' in the Rain. Here she is with Gene Kelly in what might be my favorite slice of celluloid. This number continues to amaze and I get goosebumps every time I see it (and I've seen it HUNDREDS of times!) Rest in peace Cyd. You were a SUPERSTAR (with SUPER STELLAR GAMS!!!!)

"Soul Train" Sold But Will Never Be Old

Yo, it's time to get down! Watching this video I just had to say that!
The news here is that Don Cornelius, for 35 years the driving force behind one of the best music shows ever produced for TV has sold the Soul Train franchise. God knows what they'll do with an updated version, but the old shows never wear on me. The music, the fly looks, def defying dance moves, the hottest honeys and homeboys! What more could you ask for? This montage of the Soul Train Dancers could go on forever. Look for Rosie Perez in the mix.

Act up. Sign up for Agathe Snow's "Stamina: Gloria et Patria," a Week Long Dance-a-Thon at the Armory

Performance, performance, performance! That's what the Whitney Biennial 2008 is all about with the Park Avenue Armory and Art Production Fund joining forces and getting in on the action. Though there will be a parade of special events at the Biennial off-site the Armory, one can't-be-missed orgy of decadence and resilience is Agathe Snow's mad-as-a-hatter "Stamina: Gloria et Patria," a week long dance-a-thon starting this Sunday, March 9th through March 16th. It's free and open to the public, and goes on everyday from 11 a.m. till 11 p.m., except on the last day when it'll be a 24-hour bender! So start your special ballroom diet, dust off those dancing shoes and get ready to get seriously physical. Over 50 DJs in rotation have been lined up to bust out their best jams for this historical gathering. This is going to be completely B-A-N-A-N-A-S! So in the words of the mistress of ceremony Agathe Snow: Dance! Dance for a Change! Dance for a Cause! Dance to Win!

The Red Shoes for May Day

Who doesn't love this movie? Director Michael Powell and his writing/producing partner Emeric Pressberger are genius cinematic wizards! So is their cinematographer/art director/production designer/costume designer. Post-war ballet rocks!
