Eight Items or Less: Bye Bye Bye Lou Pearlman, Bye Bye Bye Lower East Side

By Gary Pini

lou pearlmanlowereastside

1. Lou Pearlman, the svengali behind boy bands 'N Sync and the Backstreet Boys, was sentenced this morning to 25 years in federal prison for conning people out of $300 million. Bye, bye, bye.

2. Steal one, get one free. The owner of New York nightclub Prime is offering Lindsay Lohan an "$11,000 mink coat and settle the model's lawsuit against her." We're not sure how this is supposed to go down, as Lohan is the one being sued for allegedly stealing a fur coat.

3. Hotelchatter is already dissing Eric Goode's upcoming Riverview Hotel: "A cheap love hotel? Why even go about renovating the place and kicking out tenants if you are just going to have small cheap rooms."

4. Let's eat at Thor and then go to the Box. The National Trust for Historic Preservation yesterday said that the Lower East Side is one of 11 US sites most at risk for "destruction or irreparable damage."

5. A federal appeals court ruled this week that paper money discriminates against blind people because it's all the same size.

6. In spite of the eleventh-hour addition of Prince, Coachella still had 30,000 fewer attendees than 2007.

Tommie Sunshine's Coachella-ella-ella

I have been on a great tour with Junkie XL for the past month and haven't had a ton of time between remixing tracks and working on vocals for a handful of artists around the world during the time I am actually home. However, I had always said that I would never go to Coachella unless I was playing it. This year I broke my word on that as I had been invited to play at a few day parties and figured it would be nice to go hang in the desert while the weather in New York was still shit. I am not exactly sure what I expected but what I got was quite different than I could have ever dreamt of.

Daniela and I arrived on Thursday night late and had a chance to rest a bit and enjoy a night that was both warm and devoid of humidity, much unlike New York at any time of year. Now you see, I have a love/hate relationship with California in general so going there is a process every time. I love the weather there and I like the terrain but the stoned/K-Hole attitude of most everyone who lives there grates on my nerves. I will take the hard working East Coast attitude (from those who actually do) anytime, but I digress. I played a party for BPM that had a Smurf theme on Friday afternoon and it seemed that most of the people hadn't arrived yet so the attendance was slight. I had a great interview with Imeem and got a great Smurf blue hoodie and Daniela grabbed a great '70s bikini from 55DSL before I played a noisy set with a mountain behind me on a very hot day. After all that we grabbed a few things from Trader Joes and went home in time to sneak in a quick skinny dip in the pool before our housemates got home. Fuck yeah!

Coachella Wrap-Up: The Experience

By J. Everette Perry

Coachella is primarily about the music, but the entire experience is what really blew me away. It was just people enjoying being themselves, dressing however they want and just looking to have a good time.

Coachella Wrap-Up: Chilling Out at the Viceroy

By J. Everette Perry

There are more photos in this gallery. View them all.

On Saturday I went over to the hip hotel The Viceroy in Palm Springs (I have good memories in the Santa Monica one) for the GQ party and enjoyed DJ Michelle Pesce's smooth melodies to settle down the nerves before a long night at the concerts. I sipped Patron mojitos and waited for singer-songwriter Matt White to hit the stage and get everyone in the mood. I actually was able to sit by the pool, enjoy the sun, and listen to some mellow music -- it was the only time I was able to take a deep breath during the weekend.

Coachella Wrap-Up: White-Wigged M.I.A.

By J. Everette Perry

M.I.A. sported a hot white wig as she exploded in my favorite song "Boyz" off her album Kala. All of a sudden the lights went on. Supposedly, her dancers had fake guns, and the speaker system made very realistic gunshot noises during "Paper Planes," so security wanted to be able to check things out. When they left, M.I.A. started chanting over and over: “Turn the lights off! Turn the lights off!" It sounded so melodic and smooth everyone thought it was a new song -- in reality she wanted the lights back out so that she could finish her set.

Eight Items or Less: Pink Floyd's Pig Was Found, Sebastian Horsley Is Allowed in U.S. and Rogan for Target Heads to Barneys

By Gary Pini

pink floyd pig

1. Pink Floyd's pig was found (deflated) in the California desert. The band's famous inflatable stage prop accidentally drifted away during their Coachella performance over the weekend. A La Quinta resident found a "big pile of shredded plastic" in his driveway early Monday morning and will receive a $10,000 reward from the festivals organizers. (via Yahoo)

2. British author/artist Sebastian Horsley is set to appear tonight and Saturday at two PEN World Voices events in New York City. Horsley was denied entry into the U.S. in March for "moral turpitude." UPDATE: We have received word from PEN that "Mr. Horsley was unable to attend this year and will not be appearing."

rogan for target3. Spank Rock "experienced a sudden ailment" and was unable to perform at Coachella. After emergency surgery, he remains hospitalized in California and won't be appearing at Studio B on Friday.

4. Target is introducing a line of eco-friendly clothing designed by Rogan Gregory but the line will first be available only at Barneys New York. (Photo at right from the collection)

Coachella Wrap-Up: Scenes from the Anthem Party

By J. Everette Perry

There are more photos in this gallery. View them all.

The most legit party at Coachella was the Anthem party. Not only did they have a huge pool filled to the brim with people, a who's who of music industry heavyweights, but the party was an injection of adrenaline that gave me the perfect buzz right before going to see M.I.A. and Prince. The crowd was decked out to the nines: Bold stripes, vivid colors, high wasted shorts, shiny metallic fabric, sexy scarves and denim cut-offs. Everyone was rocking styles and starting trends without even trying.

Coachella Wrap-Up: Crazy for Cut-Offs

By J. Everette Perry

There are more photos in this gallery. View them all.

Cut-off shorts were the biggest hit this year at Coachella. Guys and girls both young and old rocked them. Some were bought pre-cut and others were given the scissors treatment by their owners. I saw super short ones and ones that fell right at the knee. My favorite was a long beachcomber style that I saw on a 17-year-old kid from Washington. He said, “They were too long so I just cut them up a little higher and folded them up -- all my buddies do it too.” I also saw other varieties of cut-offs, like khakis, cords, and even eyelet shorts. Anything that once was is now shorts.

Eight Items or Less: We Wish We Were at Coachella, We Miss Ben Widdicombe and We Hope Studio B Gets Their Act Together!

By Gary Pini

i'm from barcelona

1. Great shots from Coachella here. I'm from Barcelona (pictured above) are appearing on Thursday, May 1, at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple in Ft. Greene with Thao Nguyen. It's only $10 and this is an amazing venue.

2. Ben Widdicombe has left the Daily News. Today was his last column and he will now pursue his "ambition of becoming the world's first plus-size hand model."

3. The NYC Building Department issued a stop-work order on the second floor of Brooklyn club/venue Studio B. If you have tickets for their Friday night roof-top concert, call first.

4. MoMA's "Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy" exhibition opens next week. In the meantime, listen to this great UK band: Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly

5. Turn your handwriting into a font here.

6. "A violent, intelligent, profane, endearing, obnoxious, sly, richly textured and thoroughly compelling work of cultural satire disguised as fun." It is "an adoring and insightful take on modern America" with a "pungent script" that "sets a new standard for what is possible in the arts." What movie could possibly be this good? Actually it's a video game, Grand Theft Auto IV, and the quotes are from a review in today's New York Times. btw: 70,000,000 copies of the first three have already been sold.

Eight Items or Less: Music Festivals Make Money, Perez Hilton Does Radio and Dogs Get Vitamin Water

By Gary Pini

coachella

1. Big Festivals = Big Money. The reason there are so many multi-act summer music festivals is obvious when you see the numbers from last year's Lollaplooza in Chicago: 167,330 tickets sold with a $10 million gross. Over 90 acts will appear there this year from August 1st to 3rd. The folks that put together the popular Coachella in California are presenting a new one called All Points West this summer in New York.

2. If you can think of a name for a new glatt kosher restaurant in the East Village you could win $3000. Enter here: www.name-our-glatt-kosher.com

3. Coming soon: Radio Perez, Perez Hilton's twice a day three-minute radio broadcast.

4. According to CBSalary.com the lowest average starting salaries are for college grads majoring in art ($28,479) and philosophy ($28,234). But you knew that when you registered, right?

5. A beverage company, Cott Corp., is coming out with a line of vitamin water for dogs called Fortifido. That's why marketing grads can expect to make $35,838.

6. We love Australian band Cut Copy. Check out their new album In Ghost Colours.

Crude Awakening at Burning Man 2007: The Exploding Oil Derrick Installation

By Ann Magnuson

I just ran into an acquaintance who very recently returned home to L.A. from this year's Burning Man Festival. She told me things that made me yearn to return to Black Rock City. She then directed me to go to YouTube and search for "Burning Man + Derrick." The video above was described thusly: "Crude Awakening", one of the many imaginative art installations at 2007's Burning Man, features a 99 foot tall oil derrick. On Saturday night it was set ablaze to 'dramatize the worshipful relationship and dependence modern man has toward oil'.

To say nothing about the worshipful relationship and dependence modern man has on big-ass explosions. Hey! It's just like war but nobody gets hurt. This time. Every year I say I'm going to return to the playa and try to relive the highs of 1999 and every year the numbers of just how many people are expected to turn up turn me off. In '99 there were about 24,000 and that was a lot. I've heard conflicting reports but this year there were at least 42,000 there. And that is just too many people for me. (I had a major panic attack at Coachella last year -- or was it the year before last? -- when 60,000 sweating hipsters poured into the fairground to see The Pixies reunion. I was hyperventilating so much I couldn't even stay to finish watching their historic set. Oh well, at least I beat the traffic.)

Mark Smith from Explosions in the Sky: 10 Questions

By Shanon Kelley

explosions in the sky

By now, you must all know that Explosions in the Sky is one of my favorite bands in the history of all time. Seriously. This Austin-based prog-rock quartet is quite possibly the most inspiring band out there at the moment -- and they don't even sing! What's more, their fans have grown exponentially over the past few years to incredible proportions that I doubt even the band expected. I just saw them (yet again) at Coachella a few weeks ago, but as of right now EITS has put their worldwide tour on hold and are back home due to a family illness. These are strange times for them, in other words, but guitarist Mark Smith (the one who's being pointed to by the yellow arrow in the photo above) was kind enough to sit down and answer a few questions for me.

NY Doll: Why did you choose "Explosions in ihe Sky?"

Mark Smith: It just seemed like a very apt name for what we wanted to do -- a simple straightforward descriptive and concrete phrase -- and also it's a name that's thousands of times better than the name we first picked (Breaker Morant).

Neon and "The Book Is On The Table"

By Shanon Kelley

My fabulous bathing suit (which I purchased at Opening Ceremony here in New York City) was designed by none other than the Sao Paulo designer Neon. I was wearing it this last weekend at Coachella ,and crazily enough, most of CSS (some of them being designers themselves) are friends with Neon. And luckily for us, those Brazilians are wacky and fabulous!

Adriano Cintra of CSS was kind enough to pass on this video for an insane song called "The Book Is On The Table." See that crazy long-haired fellow? Well, that's the designer otherwise known as Neon! By the way, this video is amazing.

Coachella Rocked My World: Part One

By Shanon Kelley

arcade%20fire.pnglily allen

I just got back yesterday morning from an amazing weekend at Coachella. During the three-day-long festival I had the extreme pleasure of staying with the Brazilian cuties of CSS. We partied and played all weekend (and I even saw some great music in between). Other celebrities and musicians that I saw (and that were seen) include Amy Winehouse and Kelly Osbourne walking hand in hand, Vincent Gallo, Jeremy Scott, Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore (talking to Arcade Fire and then making out with an Arctic Monkey), Perry Farrell, Courtney Love, Jason Statham (actor from Snatch and The Transporter), Danny DeVito, Lindsay Lohan, Steve Aoki, Mark Hunter, Cory Kennedy, Busy Phillips and Scarlett Johansson (singing with the Jesus & Mary Chain and then later driving home with Cameron Diaz).

My favorite siting by far was Gogol Bordello frontman Eugene Hutz. I was eating a slice of pizza in the shade of the press tent when he walked by. I didn't know what I was doing at the time but I suddenly yelled out "Hey!" with a stuffed mouth. He smiled and walked over, at which point I didn't know what else to do but smile and blurt out with a mouth full of food that I loved his band.

Coachella Here I Come!

By Shanon Kelley

coachellaI'm off to the desert later this afternoon, kids! For the next three days I will be putting on 45 SPF sunblock every half hour to protect my porcelain Irish skin from the hot sun. To be quite honest, I'm actually a bit nervous about the heat -- but who cares? I'm going to Coachella!

It's going to be quite the festival this year what with Bjork, The Jesus & Mary Chain and of course the main attraction and my ultimate reason for attending this year -- Rage Against the Machine! Other favorites scheduled to perform include The Arcade Fire, CSS, Explosions in the Sky, Interpol, Grizzly Bear, Air, Mika, Pop Levi, Peter Bjorn and John, !!!, The Rapture, LCD Soundsystem and Blonde Redhead. My head is spinning already from the thought of so much amazing music all in one same place!

If you're not going, weep not! You can watch it all live and online at the AT&T Blue Room, April 27-29.
