iPhone Band Goes to Number One

By David Hershkovits

The new revenue model of the music industry seems to be working for the bands if not for the labels. Bands are routinely forgoing getting paid for selling songs or CDs, moving into the profit column instead via the anciliary benefits of living in the time we are. In addition to performing and selling T-shirts and merch to the paying fans, the jackpot these days seems to be making it onto a hit TV commercial. Cansei de Ser Sexy, better known as CSS, is a cool enough band, but what other explanation can there be for their being the number one-all time most viewed Youtube video. Blogger's Blog acknowledges that "They received a fortuitous popularity boost when their 'Music Is My Hot Hot Sex' song (the same song as in the suddenly popular video) was featured in an iPhone commercial." True that, but some bloggers are doubtful. The CSS video is approaching 100 million viewings!

Eight Items or Less: "Pull Your Pants Up" in Dallas, Casey Spooner in Hamlet and Endangered Club in Williamsburg

By Gary Pini

pull your pants up

1. Just Say No. Like the Reagan era anti-drug campaign, the city of Dallas has launched a ridiculous advertising blitz to stop the low-pants craze. "This is not just a teenage problem. There are people sagging in their 30s," Deputy Mayor Dwaine Caraway tells NPR. The campaign includes billboards and a theme song: "Pull Your Pants Up."

2. Hamlet, The Wooster Group's "first encounter with Shakespeare," features FISCHERSPOONER member Casey Spooner in four roles and music written for the production by his partner Warren Fischer. It runs until December 1st at The Public Theater.

3. DJ Magazine announced the results of their annual Top 100 DJs competition this week. With over 300,000 people voting, Armin Van Buren beat out Tiesto for the number one spot. DJ #4, Paul Van Dyk is spinning tomorrow night at the Halloween Ball at Roseland, 239 West 52nd St. $40.

4. Next time just toss a TV. Courtney Love has been banned from posh London hotel Claridge's because she set fire to her $3,000 a night room during a previous stay.

5. Luiza from CSS and Bjorn from Peter, Bjorn and John are DJing tonight at Cheeky Bastard in the Hiro Ballroom of the Maritime Hotel, 317 West 16. While neither made the aforementioned Top 100, the event is free.

6. Author Michael Gross describes life across the street from CBGB many moons ago: "The block housed drug dealers offering everything from coke to Colombian weed (sold out of a full wooden barrel by the hairy hobbit who rented my building's basement) to Iranian opium." (via The New York Observer)

7/ Endangered club alert! Williamsburg's Triple Crown is under attack from just about everybody -- police, fire department, neighbors, etc. -- and they need your help. Stop by the venue at 108 Bedford Ave. this Sunday from 1-9 p.m. and sign a petition to let them live in peace. Of course there will be tons of DJs to entertain you: The Rub, Negroclash, Bangers, etc.

Lovefoxxx and a Bodysuit Make a Great Pair

By Shanon Kelley

lovefoxxxI went to the CSS show the other night at Irving Plaza. It was a tough choice between them (my buddies) and Animal Collective (my idols), but in the end I opted for seeing the Brazilian cuties. It was good decision! CSS brought the house down, as did their openers, Tampa's Yo Majesty, a hip hop trio of black lesbians.

My favorite part of the night (and the reason for this blog) was Lovefuxxx's outfit. We all know that the CSS leading lady likes to wear bodysuits while she performs, but this one topped them all! It was specially made for her by a friend/designer in Brazil. It's covered in thousands upon thousands of rainbow sequins. Love it!

And you know who else love's it? Donita Sparks! That's right, the lady of L7 fame loves CSS and did a mash up of "Alala" and "Pretend We're Dead." Listen to it on their MySpace page.

The $15,000 Concert

By PAPERMAG Editors

pillowbilly joel

Here's a report from your special correspondent Gary Pini....

While you're sitting on scalding concrete at the Siren Festival this summer or waiting in line to hear your favorite DJ at PS1, pause for a minute and close your eyes. Imagine what suffering the unfortunate music fan in the Hamptons is going through. No Ruff Club, no Panty Party, no Mr. Black and barely a live venue in sight. But Wait! The $15,000 per person concert series is coming to save the day . The line-up includes Prince, Billy Joel (at least he won't have drive far), Tom Petty, James Taylor and Dave Mathews. We are falling asleep just thinking about it. And to be sure that you get your money's worth, the promoters (Bulldog Entertainment) promise more perks than the artists' dressing rooms: valet parking, celebrity chefs and even Moroccan pillows. Yes, we make fun now, but in 2037 we'll be first in line for the $150,000 tickets to see the Battles, CSS, Klaxons, Feist and Bonde do Role.

Neon and "The Book Is On The Table"

By Shanon Kelley

My fabulous bathing suit (which I purchased at Opening Ceremony here in New York City) was designed by none other than the Sao Paulo designer Neon. I was wearing it this last weekend at Coachella ,and crazily enough, most of CSS (some of them being designers themselves) are friends with Neon. And luckily for us, those Brazilians are wacky and fabulous!

Adriano Cintra of CSS was kind enough to pass on this video for an insane song called "The Book Is On The Table." See that crazy long-haired fellow? Well, that's the designer otherwise known as Neon! By the way, this video is amazing.

Coachella Rocked My World: Part One

By Shanon Kelley

arcade%20fire.pnglily allen

I just got back yesterday morning from an amazing weekend at Coachella. During the three-day-long festival I had the extreme pleasure of staying with the Brazilian cuties of CSS. We partied and played all weekend (and I even saw some great music in between). Other celebrities and musicians that I saw (and that were seen) include Amy Winehouse and Kelly Osbourne walking hand in hand, Vincent Gallo, Jeremy Scott, Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore (talking to Arcade Fire and then making out with an Arctic Monkey), Perry Farrell, Courtney Love, Jason Statham (actor from Snatch and The Transporter), Danny DeVito, Lindsay Lohan, Steve Aoki, Mark Hunter, Cory Kennedy, Busy Phillips and Scarlett Johansson (singing with the Jesus & Mary Chain and then later driving home with Cameron Diaz).

My favorite siting by far was Gogol Bordello frontman Eugene Hutz. I was eating a slice of pizza in the shade of the press tent when he walked by. I didn't know what I was doing at the time but I suddenly yelled out "Hey!" with a stuffed mouth. He smiled and walked over, at which point I didn't know what else to do but smile and blurt out with a mouth full of food that I loved his band.
