Katy Perry to Guest Star on The Young and the Restless

By Alexis Swerdloff

katy perry

Pop starlet du jour Katy Perry (of "I Kissed a Girl" fame) is slated to appear on the Jun. 12 episode CBS soap The Young and the Restless. According to a press release, "Katy plays herself at a photo shoot, where she poses as the cover girl for the second issue of Restless Style magazine. She appears opposite Nicholas and Phyllis Newman (Joshua Morrow and Michelle Stafford), along with Jack and Sharon Abbott (Peter Bergman and Sharon Case). Looks like she is following in the footsteps of a certain Casey Spooner (of Fischerspooner) who also made a cameo on the soap. We wonder who the hipster talent scout is over at CBS reeling in these PAPER-friendly cuties... Meanwhile, look out for Katy in PAPER's August issue!

Fabian, on His Way to L.A. to Compete in a Game Show, Chills with Diana Ross in the Admirals Lounge at JFK

By Fabian Basabe

Dear readers... I owe you a write up on the DHL-sponsored Zac Posen event which had a great turnout and benefits a great cause, Teacher's Count... bear with me as I am currently at the Admirals Club at JFK waiting to board a flight to L.A. Oh yeah... I forgot to mention... I am competing to win a million dollars on a game show this weekend! In the spirit of the generous charitable efforts this Fashion Week, I hope I win so I can put it to good use helping people. Will keep you posted! Wish me luck!

[one hour later]

I am still in the Admiral's Club as my flight was cancelled due to a mechanical problem... which I just learned is code for "we had too many empty seats and need to combine flights." I am so mad!!!! Like CBS couldn't send a plane for me!!!!

Anyway, I am hanging with Diana Ross in the lounge who is also on my flight so that's pretty cool! I almost did not recognize her but she looks amazing! And so nice... she is talking to everyone.... we have at least two more hours, so why not!

Okay I won't keep you just because I am bored out of my mind!!!

Kid Nation Reminds Us of American Cannibal

By Alexis Swerdloff

Just read this New York Times article about the CBS realiy show Kid Nation, "whose premise is to take 40 children, ages 8 to 15, and place them in a 'ghost town' in New Mexico to see if they can build a working society without the help of adults." Apparently, the state attorney general's office claims that the show might be violating the state's child-labor laws...

The article continues, "Four children received medical treatment for accidentally drinking bleach, one child was burned on her face with hot grease while cooking in an unsupervised kitchen, and most of the children were required to work 14 hours or longer per day. They received a payment of $5,000 for their participation."

Uh, doesn't this remind you a bit of American Cannibal, the documentary about the cannibal-themed reality show that went terribly awry that ultimately turned out to be a mockumentary (because the reality show never existed)??

That said, we're both horrified and kind of curious, and may watch this labor-camp-esque show when it premieres on Sept. 19...
