Happy Birthday CD!

By Alexis Swerdloff

happy birthday cdIt turns out that today is the 25th birthday of the Compact Disc, aka the CD. Since August 17, 1982, there have been 200 billion CDs produced -- that's a lot of CDs! Though the mp3 has gone on to eclipse the CD in popularity, the CD is still chugging along. So, have a good one, CD. You deserve it.

Happy 60th Birthday Pucci!!!

By Mickey Boardman

It's no secret that Mr. Mickey loves some fun color combinations and who does that better than Pucci? The Florence-based fashion house celebrated it's 60th anniversary with a swell shindig at the Palazzo Pucci. Come on, how much would you pay to live in the Palazzo Pucci!!!??? Here's a snap from Style.com of three of the most glamourous of glamour pusses in attendance: Delphine Arnault, Elizabeth Hurley and Laudomia Pucci.
Naturally the current designer of Pucci, sexy and succulent Matthew Williamson was there, with his ultra-gorgeous friend Kylie Minogue. Mr. Mickey think Kylie is the closest thing we have to another Dolly Parton today. Dolly is literally an angel from heaven and so is Kylie, although since she's younger, Dolly's legend status is more established.
Finally, check out these amazing Pucci print balloons in the courtyard of the Palace. Mr. Mickey is gagging over those!!!

Happy Birthday Jeffrey Dahmer!

By Dennis Dermody

jeffrey DahmerJeffrey dahmer

Today is our favorite American serial killer/cannibal Jeffrey Dahmer's birthday. He was born May 21, 1960 and would have been 47 today if he hadn't killed, dismembered and eaten all those young lads and subsequently got himself murdered in prison. Jeffrey, we hardly knew ye!

Design Week Mania

By Kim Hastreiter

Studio Jobingo maurerstudio%20job.jpg

Design Week hit New York on Saturday and continues until tomorrow with back-to-back parties, exhibitions, conferences and, of course, the ICFF (International Contemporary Furniture Fair) at the Javits Center. All the design heads are here in town from all over the world and believe me, they all showed up for Murray Moss's opening party on Saturday night. (Murray told me 5,000 people stopped by and they ran out of wine halfway after pouring through 26 cases!!!!)

Moss has a show of the young hot Dutch design team Studio Job (see their ceramics above) and their stuff was selling like hotcakes. I'm sure Larry Gogosian is trolling Studio Job, as their pieces are quite conceptual and sell for up to $160,000, and I think were almost sold out!

Last night, I hosted a dinner at my home with Murray Moss, his partner Franklin Getchell and my friend, jewelry designer Ted Muehling, to celebrate a milestone birthday for our old dear friend Ingo Maurer (the legendary German light designer... see his classic bulb design above). Murray was in charge of the invite list and it turned out to be a fun group of people. Studio Job's Job Smeets and his girlfriend Nynke both came (they are so glamourous... see how cute they are in the photo above). They told me they're hopping back to New York in a couple of weeks, because the CFDA invited them to design the CFDA Design Awards. Should be fab. It was fun to bond with them.

Happy Birthday William Inge!

By Dennis Dermody

Today is the birthday of the late, great, American playwright William Inge, born in Independence, Kansas in 1913, who rose to fame with searing 1950s dramas such as Come Back Little Sheba, Bus Stop, The Dark At The Top Of The Stairs, the wonderful original screenplay to Splendor In The Grass and my personal favorite Picnic.

Picnic also has the sexiest, most romantic dance in movie history between Kim Novak and William Holden, which I included here. Inge was a truly unhappy man who took his own life in 1973, and his portraits of lonely frustrated spinsters and sexually panicked youth seem rather dated now. But there are moments of poetry and genius in his writing that glow as brightly as the colored lanterns in this sublime scene from the 1965 film version of Picnic.

Happy Birthday Al Green!

By Dennis Dermody

The great R&B singer Al Green, who was born on April 13, 1946, turns 61 tomorrow. To me there is no other singer whose voice can melt my brain to mush like Al. Even when he became a Reverend and started singing Gospel songs I bought every album and attended every concert when he played New York. You used to always catch Lou Reed there too. He once came down the aisle and shook my hand (which I refused to wash for a week). Let's face it, Al Green is God. Here's a clip from a bizarre 1970s TV special with the group Chicago. But just listen to him wail "Tired Of Being Alone"....
