Phil Spector Buys Freedom, World Shrugs, "Lana Who?"
By Ann Magnuson

Sure pays to be rich in this town. Especially if you like guns. Poor Lana Clarkson. If only someone had told her NO NO NO you DON'T "make connections" following nutty powerbrokers back to their mansions at three in the morning. Go home, get a good night's rest and work on your scene from Streetcar for tomorrow's class. I don't know what to say so I'll let some of the commenters on today's L.A. times story on Spector do the talking. (See below)
Or as Steve Lopez said in his column today:
Does anyone out there believe some penniless schmo with a dead woman in his house and a gun in his hand would beat the rap if his lawyer was a no-name and he couldn't afford a parade of favorable witnesses?
One thing I will offer -- my services to the prosecution when (if?) they retry the case. FACT: ALL actresses are depressed. BUT NOT SUICIDAL. If so there would be hundreds if not thousands of unemployed-actress-suicides here every day. The acting profession, especially in L.A., is a DEPRESSING vocation. But few people kill themselves over it. Are you kidding me? Everyone is too narcissitic for THAT! Even the most successful actors and actresses are beset with anxiety. And the ones who do commit suicide (Freddie Prinze) or try to (Owen Wilson) are in more anquish over their drug problems than their career. Everyone involved wonders WHAT THE HELL AM I DOING IN THIS RETARDED CRAZY BUSINESS!!?? (uh...oh yeah. Decent Health Insurance. And the occasional free designer outfit.) Portraying Clarkson as just 'depressed' over her acting career can only illicit the following response... yeah, so??? What else is new? Besides, as one of Clarkson's friends who left a comment on the L.A. Times site (see last comment below), she wasn't despondant at all. In fact, she was quite optimistic. Besides, the liklihood of Clarkson offing herself over her anemic resume is pretty far-fetched. And for her to have done so in such a manner is... well, what's the point of saying any more? An expensive defense team could convince any of us that we pulled the trigger that night. The district attorney's office is probably contemplating having a nightcap at Spector's mansion right about now. Talk about depressed!
