Warming Up Billyburg-style with Chromeo, A-Trak and Bloc Party

By Sean Keenan

Filter and ANTICS threw an All Points West warm up party at the Williamsburg Warehouse last Thursday night -- and these guys knew what they were doing. It felt like all of Brooklyn came out. Even with the rain, the line stretched down the block with no intention to budge. But just when all hope seemed lost, the fine people at Meanred Productions appeared and saved us from an eternity in line limbo.

By the time I got inside, Dave 1 of Chromeo was already manning the tables, quickly turning the dance floor into a packed sweat-fest. And sure enough, alongside stood his little brother A-Trak who, as Kanye West's backing DJ, is no stranger to the turntables.

Santogold Brings the Heat in Central Park

By Sean Keenan

There are more photos in this gallery. View them all.

It was amazing to see so many people out in Central Park on such a brutally hot day, one of the hottest of the year for sure. But the place was packed and Santogold certainly did not disappoint. Reppin’ Bed-Stuy, this hip-hop/reggae diva hit the stage and refueled a worn-out crowd with a bolt of energy and charisma. It was a big sweaty feel good pow-wow when she got all arms swaying in the air. To warm up the crowd, as if they needed it in this heat, Diplo and A-Trak spun with Kid Cudi, Blaqstarr and Mz Streamz supporting on the mic. Their dance crew brought some serious New York playground vibes to the stage. I half expected them to bring out a jump rope and chant in unison. A-Trak showed off his technical skills, supplied with two decks and a warehouse of records. This guy is a born DJ, redefining what a turntable can do. Having won DMC’s World DJ Championship in 1997 at only age 15, he’s gone on to DJ for Kanye West, and make a pretty serious career behind the DJ booth. But Diplo knew how to work the crowd with just the right recipe of jams. This maverick Philly-based DJ helped produce M.I.A’s latest album, Kala, and when he dropped in "Paper Planes" on the set, the crowd went nutz! We’re only halfway through the summer, and there’s much more to come, but SummerStage is going to have a hard time topping this one.

By Alexis Swerdloff

1. PS 1’s Summer Warm Up Series (now in its tenth year!) just announced its stellar summer lineup. Folks like LCD Soundsystem, Au Revoir Simone, Metro Area, Neil Aline, James Chance, Matthew Dear and many others will be DJing and performing live in the PS 1 courtyard amid luscious vegetation and chickens (yes, chickens!) thanks to this year’s Young Architects Program winners WORK Architecture Company and their Public Farm One (see photo above). The fun begins July 5 with a Nublu-hosted extravaganza.

2. Solange Knowles (sister of Beyonce -- but a very talented and soulful singer in her own right!) held her 22nd birthday last night in the Hollywood Hills where she rocked out with Pharrell-protogés/Harvard grads Chester French.

3. Joining the ranks of Aesop Rock and The Crystal Method, Chicago-based DJ and Producer A-TRAK releases Running Man: Nike+ Original Run today exclusively on iTunes.

4. Prospect Heights eatery James (605 Carlton Ave.), courtesy of husband/wife duo Deborah Williamson and Bryan Calvert, opens tonight. The restaurant serves seasonal American fare (the semolina-crusted zucchini blossoms stuffed with peekytoe crab sounds yummy) and the walls feature mirrors from the original Plaza Hotel.

5. Colette, the ultra-chic and ultra-curated Parisian boutique that we just can’t get enough of, is opening up a small pop-up shop next to the Gap flagship store on 54th and Fifth Ave. from Sept. 6-Oct. 5! (via Fashionista)

6. DJ Mom Jeans, aka Danny Masterson, aka a 2008 PAPER Beautiful Person, is DJing with Max Wowch at Santos' Party House tonight at 12 a.m., following the Todd DiCiurcio (also a Beautiful Person!!) “Synthesis” opening.

Tommie Sunshine Lives For Two Things: “Daniela and Music”

By Tommie Sunshine

MARCH 29

Well rested and ready to rock, I began my day with the power and fury needed to endure WMC. Three gigs strong, I knew this one was going to be the hard one. Before Daniela and I were even able to leave the hotel, my good friend Austin showed up to my hotel with 200 T-shirts with my name on them, the "e" in Tommie being the Etnies logo (where he works) and two pair of Barton Perreira sunglasses for me. This is how every day should start and I slipped on my new shades with a toothy grin. Off to gig one at the Club Monaco store on Collins where a crazy dance party broke out and if you watch Yo Gabba Gabba (which if you don't, you should) you see the striking resemblance to Nathaniel the one kid is rocking.
